I concur. My cousin is a Case-worker and she tells me all the horror stories. Even tried to get me to adopt a couple to get them out of the situation that they are in.

A few thoughts:

1) I would never punish my children this way.

2) I don't think it's abuse. But then again, child abuse has different definitions depending on who you ask. Did it bother me to watch it? Yes. But, I'm sure people are doing far worse things to their children out there.

3) The only punishments I have sustained were a spanking (maybe once or twice) and getting my mouth washed out with soap if I said something my mother didn't like (again, happened maybe once or twice). When I'm a parent, those are the only types of punishment I would ever threaten with and possibly use.

I think the failure in parenting occurs way before this video is shot. Corrective action early can prevent the need for this kind of punishment later. You make it VERY clear from early on that you are the boss and that your rules will be obeyed. At the same time, shower the child with love and attention - two things children vitally need from parents.

You cannot tell a child "I love you" too many times. You cannot spend too much time with a child - especially when they're very young. When the child is secure, knows they are loved and knows their boundaries, they don't have these out-of-control moments where they act out to the point where you have to drastically punish them.

Raising kids is extremely difficult and very time-consuming. But it's still possible to do it correctly in this day and age, and it's still possible to have a good kid. I know tons of examples personally.

I'd plus 10 this if I could. Your children have to know who's the boss, but discipline should come from love and concern. Your child's obedience should come from love and respect, not fear. Hot sauce and cold showers might not be abuse, but it smacks of sadism, anger, and power tripping. Children can be reasoned with, and there are many non-physical punishments that can be effective. However, when a physical correction is called for, and it will be with even the best children once in a while, a simple spanking has been proven effective and sufficient by parents all around the world for centuries.

How is this any different from putting a bar of soap in a child's mouth when they mouth off? That happened to me a few times as a child. At least hot sauce is edible.

Dawn dishsoap tastes horrible...............I cursed alot when I was younger. Still do as a matter of fact, TAKE THAT MOM! :lol:
