Dutch College Football fan coming to BIG RED!

Hi guys,

My name is Byron and I live in The Netherlands. I'm probably the biggest college football fan overhere. I have visted florida gators VS Fsu in the Swamp. On my honeymoon last year we went to the Usc VS Stanford and Ucla VS arizona state games. My wife and I also went to the penn state VS Ucf game in Dublin. We also went to some nfl games in Londen, this year we Will go to the rams VS giants game in London.

But I'm here for college football! It's my passion, I even write for a football magazine in the Netherlands where I focus on one college team every month.

Next year my wife and I Will probably go to orlando florida for around 2 weeks. Of course I want to go to a College game in this periode, but because I already visited the gators once I want to go to an other stadium. One of the teams, stadium and fans I always admired are you guys. Can you please give me some advice about going to the arkansas state opening game next year.

What to do? Where to stay? What can't we miss? How about tailgating?

The plan is to fly from Amsterdam to Omaha on the friday before the game and leave the monday after to orlando.

Thank you in advance!

I hope my english is good enough for you to understand.

I can't give you any game day advice because I haven't been in Lincoln for over 10 years, but I think your plan looks good so far! The only thing I would suggest is maybe go to a better game, as Arkansas State will likely be a pushover. Ohio State and Wisconsin both play in Lincoln in October next year.

On a side note, I love the Netherlands. It's one of the most beautiful countries I've been to and the people all seem so happy and healthy over there!

Nebraska vs. Arkansas State may be a hard ticket to get in 2016

Nebraska vs. Fresno State is the opener this year.

Lincoln is always a good time and tailgates are welcoming, especially for someone from outside the US. Nebraksans have a need to show how nice we are to people who will tell stories back home, I mean that in a good way.

Good luck and safe travels.

If money is no object, stay at the DoubleTree in Downtown Lincoln, because you'll be in walking distance of:

-The Haymarket (Great nightlife, restaurants, and a Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings)

-"O" Street (where the college bars are located)

-Memorial Stadium (great location so no worries about parking for the game--you can walk there)

Make sure to check out the following when in town:

-Misty's (excellent Prime Rib)

-Runza

-Lazlo's (Microbrew brewpub and restaurant)

-Blue Blood Brewing (Taproom in south Lincoln, minutes from downtown Lincoln)

If I'm in town, I'll be happy to buy you a beer (or three) and thank you for making the trip to see our team.

And make sure you stick around the boards here--Nebraska fans are some of the biggest historians of collegiate football. We don't just talk Nebraska here.

Question for you: what is it about American football that you like? The sport has not generally not caught on well with most Europeans. Not like basketball has, anyway.

Yes I would like to stay near the stadium, so we won't have to drive back to the hotel after the game and tailgaiting.

At USC I paid 500 dollar for 2 nights, so I expect something like that at most college for big time college games.

We want to meet some great Nebraska people and fans to enjoy the game day atmosphere at Nebraska, I read somewhere that the opening game is one of the best to go to?

Any good BBQ joint in Lincoln Nebraska I love me some ribs!

What my wife and I mostly wish is to join some great Nebraska people to tailgate(Yes we will bring some Dutch food with us!) with. At Florida and USC this never happened, I had some people to tell me to find them, but closer to the game they mostly backed of or I never heard from them again.

I will stick around here!

Question for you: what is it about American football that you like? The sport has not generally not caught on well with most Europeans. Not like basketball has, anyway.
Basketball isn't big here. It's soccer, soccer and soccer what matters here.

What I like about this beautifull game! Everything!

The stadiums are mostly beautifull!

The passion for the players, teams and coaches is wonderfull to see and be part of.

I love the bands, in Europe we haven't has something like that with soccer.

Recruiting is perfect. Work hard as a coaching staff and make your own future.

I'm a soccer coach and always have followed coaches and I think that Football is the sport where coaches make the biggest difference in the outcome of the game. I love that.

The tactical side of it, I love how a good game plan(where they worked the whole week on) makes the difference between winning and losing.

Gladiators on a chess board sums it up for me!

I guess I still consider "this year" "next year" because it is 3 months away. But you make some good sense!

As for barbecue, while it's prevalent in Lincoln, it's Kansas City-style mostly, and better had in Kansas City proper if your travels ever take you through that city (probably not unless you get a hankering to take in a Missouri game...which I personally wouldn't recommend for multiple reasons). Having said that, many tailgaters grill out and some even have barbecue.

And the Doubletree runs ~$200/night during off-season/non-holiday times for a King suite, so you're probably looking at $250-$300/night during football season, and possibly a requirement that you book for two nights. And heck, our coach still lives out of the DoubleTree because it's so close to downtown and because they haven't found a house they like yet--so maybe you'll run into our coach while you're staying in town!

Also, I would suggest taking a tour of the stadium when time allows--our program has five national championships, three Heisman candidates, and a multitude of accomplishments that we celebrate. And our University campus in late summer/early fall has a lot of beauty to it--both in landscaping and co-eds.

And opening day *is* a good day to go, to a degree. Best time is when we have a marquee opponent in town, like Ohio State or Wisconsin. Honestly, if you could postpone your trip for one of those games (they're a month after the opener), I believe you'll have an even better experience, win or lose.

Guys--correct me here if any of this is incorrect, please. Don't want to provide misinformation to our future guest.

Thanks for the detailed answer! I think we sometimes need an outside perspective to remember why we love this sport too. Many coaches see the recruiting aspect as a necessary evil, and something that creates lots of work in the off-season. You are right, though, that it does create another interesting aspect of following the sport, and another way where skill = success. Great observation.

I think that all of your points are also reasons why we Americans love the sport, but more than that, why some of us love the College game (the original version, BTW) better than pros. In most of the US, College Football plays second-fiddle to the NFL. The southeastern US is the exception to this, as well as pockets of the midwest and west, like Nebraska/Iowa, Boise State, etc. Often these are programs with no NFL team nearby, or a crappy one.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that if fans that are passionate about college football are what you relate to, Nebraska is one of the best destinations. Thanks for your posts!

Your post actually got me really thinking about the way we twist language when talking about sports. Because most people (myself included) would agree with you that "next football year" would be the 2016 season, even though we're already in 2016, so "next football year" occurs "this year."
