Early expectations for this year.

nothing is really changing as far as recruiting goes.
Compared to the last 4 classes under Pelini, this one is off to a great start.
And we hired that consulting firm to revamp our recruiting process earlier this year. We're already seeing dividends from that partnership by the early signings we're having. Stuff has changed. The question is, are those changes going to affect us positively in the W/L column? We'll see.

And even if it does, that doesn't have anything to do with 2012, or even 2013. Earliest we see that impact is likely 14' and 15'. This is a very good example of Pelini's inexperience showing through. He needed to make huge investments in recruiting from day 1, instead he put it off got us to 9 wins then in year 5 starts addressing something that has a 3-4 year lag time in regards to impact.

True, but give the guy credit for making the outside-the-box adjustment.
Absolutely. Just hopefully it isn't too little too late. I still think what saves Pelini isn't necessarily any direct action of his, but the 2013 schedule. Depending on how this season turns out, I'm convinced that will be a make or break year for him. Won't need a championship (Ohio state has that) but being competitive in that game and the 11-12 wins that schedule is set up for will be a must.

Pelini doesn't need saving, though. He's not going to be ousted by UNL anytime soon. If he leaves for a different gig that's another story, but he's not going to be fired for what he's done here.

when you put it like that it seems like there isn't much to be hopeful for as a Husker fan. nothing is really changing as far as recruiting goes. the coaching staff is actually getting more inexperienced as the seasons progress. we've graduated away the best leftovers from Callahan, and the best JUCO guys Pelini was able to find. We have a rough schedule, operating a "spread killing" defense in a non-spread conference, with a history of being completely unable to stop any QB even remotely close to being mobile (see R. Wilson's rushing numbers from last year and where he got a good chunk of them), playing 5-6 teams a year with mobile QBs, all the while trying to be a power offense with finesse players.

this is depressing. 8 hours of meetings ahead and i'm actually excited to go just to get away from this thread :)
You are very depressing to read. I may be overly optimistic but the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle. Shaw was a mobile QB and we kept him at bay. Our defense hinges on the secondary play, and they played pretty well in the Bowl game before the TEAM meltdown. Its no coincidence, Green started getting better when Bo started helping with the secondary. I see no reason to believe our secondary wont be dominate this year with BO now paying more attention to secondary and defense as a whole. We have alot of experience coming back and Siesay is said to be the real deal, with Antonio Bell on his heals. We are deep at corner all of the sudden with good experience at saftey coming back. If our starters at LB stay healthy we will be alright, not elite but good and experienced, along with good experience on the line coming back.

Remember Dennard Crick David only played one full game together. We are really going to miss David, everywhere else will be just fine. Step away from the ledge people.

And really - that change was made between 10' and 11', it's not something that will improve much between 11', and 12'...and that's what we're worried about.
We should see more improvement in year 2 of Beck's system than in year 1. Last year was about the change over. This year will be about getting better within the system.

Same logic applies to more improvement in NU's second year in the B1G. Many (including myself) didn't think the conference change would be that big a deal, but it clearly was. With a season under our belts, and far fewer new teams to face, we should do better.

I'm still optimistic we'll be in the CCG, which gives us a chance to win the conference.

The firm was to help the coaches understand a recruits mentality, by asking the right questions to judge the kids character. An example would be how well the kid will handle adversity. Its to help get the right kids on the team like a Rex Burkhead, hard working driven kids that will shine when the pressure is on and not fold mentally under the pressure.

It has absolutly nothing to do with our fast start in recruiting, and im sure the recruiting gurus will back me on this. The coaches have changed some things to try and lock kids up earlier in the process, but this firm didnt just come in and recruit the kids for us, they are just helping judge the character of the kids through the right questioning helping identify the kids we want in our program earlier.

Not yet. It won't be long before the discussion is more frequent unless the status quo that gets us the same thing year in and year out is broken. Tom won't be here, and Pelini might not put up with the BS. Whether he leaves like Frank, Cally, or Carl really makes no difference. The discussion will get louder, and the voices bigger.

There is ZERO chance we fire Pelini unless the wheels completely fall off. We made that mistake with Solich and it backfired on us badly. We will not slam our hands in the car door again. Bo might leave on his own, but he won't be fired for maintaining the status quo.

I disagree. I see the Pelini and solich scenarios as entirely different and the circumstances as very different. Less championships, less wins, less support, more drama, and in a different era of college football. Lot has changed in the last decade.

I'll post this again. Here's a list I put together of last years top 25 coaches, sorted by their winning percentage for their first 4 years as a HC.

And every one of those above him has won something of substance....including many below him.

You can disagree all you want. It's not going to happen.
