This is a wild take. If you had a job offer that allowed you to better provide for your spouse and children, you’re most likely taking it.

Some of these kids are providing for siblings, parents and even their own kids. They deserve it, and we definitely don’t show Emmett loyalty this year when Satt sat him and didn’t even show him love. Despite him being our best 1A. We probably would’ve had one of the best 1-2 punches in the B10 if he and Dowdwll see the time together.

We’ve all seen jobs not be loyal to people, and we’re about to see 42 players get cut from the team because of the new NCAA rules. Where’s the loyalty?

I could not agree more with the first part.  When coaches have 8 figure contracts & the sport is generating billions, it's unreasonable to think an education was equitable.  I'll even take it a step further, shame on the NCAA for waiting until their hand was forced in state legislatures.  

I could not disagree more with the second part.  I know where you are coming from, but just because behavior is standard outside your org doesn't mean it should be expected or excepted inside your org.  This requires leadership setting the culture inside their org, screening for prospects that are cultural fits, and proactively managing them as "employees".  

 
What a conversation.  I mean, it's telling, as to the times.  The Academics vs The Opportunists? 

I guess there's always been a mix of those things.

Right now nothing is stopping them and it ends when the school says thanks but no thanks, you aren’t worth that price.   It’s called supply and demand, but with year to year commitments.

Many of us stopped calling them student athletes long ago.  When they were getting paid under the table and taking classes just to stay eligible

Again, lots of people on Huskerboard have said its big boy football now.  The are getting paid and now they need to learn how to deal with the criticisms that come with professional style sports.

So one other thing of quick note on all of this.  Not a single player that has announced before today that they were going into the portal actually did.  The portal doesn't even open until today.  They announced their "intention" to go into the portal.

Small detail, but one that needs to be remembered with these conversations.

Of course, anyone announcing today and beyond will actually be in the portal, and not with the team anymore.

I agree I think this is ultimately the direction the business will trend. I'm not really sure what it will look like but I also don't think what's happening right now is sustainable or good for the sport. 

We all seem to collectively agree that it would be bad if players in the NFL, NBA, MLB, etc., just had free reign to accept new contracts and deals and change teams every single season, which is why the contracts and players' unions are in place.

I think a few places to start:

  • some kind collective bargaining framework to set standardized guidelines for NIL compensation, equity and transparency
  • a tiered salary cap system similar to the NBA's luxury tax or NFL's salary cap (universities would have a maximum total NIL pool they can distribute across their roster. This wouldn’t necessarily mean capping individual player deals outright, but rather capping the aggregate spend)
  • retention incentives and transfer penalties (e.g. players get more funds the longer they stay somewhere and modest financial penalties tied to transfers linked to NIL incentives)
  • required auditing and public reporting
