ESPN College Game Day

I know we like to pretend that ESPN College Game Day is not that big of a deal but clearly it changed CFB. With Lee Corso retiring after week one this season it did get me thinking about what a huge deal the show became.

I can remember the first time they went on location. At ND taking on FSU. I was at a friends house and we were doing a school project. Watching Game Day was totally different, it changed the game for me. I ChatGPT'ed it just to see for sure and it looks like Game Day has been to Lincoln 7 times. I could MAYBE see them coming for the Michigan this year, maybe.

I was at the UCLA game and I remember going to the broadcast (and getting on TV! I recorded it and saw it later), But it really made CFB so much more exciting. I might have been at the 98 one as well but I don't even remember it (#Drinking)

I have seen the Big Noon thing in person once and it was okay, but it was not the same.

📅 Notable Lincoln Broadcasts:

  • 1994: Weekends featuring games against UCLA and Colorado (huskers.com).
  • 1998: The matchup between Nebraska and Washington (huskers.com).
  • 2001: Two shows — before games against Notre Dame and Oklahoma (huskers.com).
  • 2007: Home game versus USC (1011now.com).
  • 2019: Nebraska vs Ohio State in September (espnpressroom.com).

That adds up to the 7 total visits confirmed in ESPN’s records.

It's not a big deal to me because I haven't watched ESPN in probably over a decade now.

I didn't even know it was still on the air until I saw some viral Shane Gillis clips last year. Same with the ESPY awards this year. Just give him all the money.

I have not watched anything except live sports on ESPN since they started the Longhorn Network. They are nothing but a hype machine for their vested interests. SEC and so on. They can do what they want. I just don't watch it.

You are missing out, College Game Day is still amazing. I think for a lot of us Husker fans we started to "hate it" because the Huskers were not covered as much, but, when Game Day first started, the Huskers were covered ALL THE TIME...because they were awesome.

I've tried watching CGD a few times the last couple years, and it's completely unwatchable. It's a terrible collection of inane bather that is WAY too long with so many commercials. There are a ton of podcasts with good discussion and production quality now with few or no commercials that are much better.

I've become bored with the constant hype machine and just watch the games though and skip all of that. Non-Husker games I only watch if I can skip the commercials. I have to watch the Huskers in realtime though to avoid spoilers because my family is constantly texting about what's happening.

The length of CGD can be an issue. Now, when it was 30 minutes, that was not long enough. Now I think it hits 2 hours, which is probably a bit long.

Eeh, it used to be amazing.
Loved Corso, Herbie and Fowler but Desmond pretty much ruined it for me…and Pat McAfee lit it on fire and drove it off the cliff. Can’t stand that guy but at least I don’t want to punch him like I do Des. It used to be must watch TV but that was a long time ago. Last couple of years I have preferred Big Noon, and that’s saying something because it sucks pretty bad. Don’t care if I see either of them at this point.

I get it, but it is still the best pre game show, or I think it is.

I got on the Big Noon bandwagon when it started, mostly because I don't have ESPN. But yeah, it wore off pretty quickly (I assume because I am getting older, so gameday would be the same). But for some reason I am going to go out and try and find a Wendy's right now.

Maybe it is just the memories of it, but Gameday just seems important to me, when it comes to Saturdays in the fall.
