ESPN: First Take with Pelini

Lets all be honest. The comment that Martinez will play QB in the NFL is a joke. There is a big difference on the skills you have to have in college compared to the NFL.

I like him for us here at Nebraska, but if I was an NFL coach ----no way
Not as a QB. I could see him at WR, DB or as a return specialist. I know the NFL is changing the way they see/use QBs, but even still, Martinez would have to change A LOT to make it there. Speed alone isn't enough.

I don't think it's too off track.

Right now, what would Taylor have to do for him to be like Russell Wilson, who, you know, only led the Seahawks to the playoffs last year?
No offense to Taylor, because I'm a big fan of his, but he is no where near the QB Russell Wilson is as of right now.
What would he have to do to achieve a game like Russell Wilson has right now?

Better passer, better decision maker, learn a pro style attack, etc.

I'm not doggin on Taylor at all, but Russell Wilson is one of the better young QB's in the NFL. And I said as of right now, because we don't know if Taylor can/will be on the same level in the future.

Pelini gets done with his SC interview and who do they nab to follow up? Freakin' Nobler.

That's what I was looking for; I don't think Taylor right now is an NFL QB, but I don't think it's as stretched a comparison as it was when he was a freshman or even a sophomore.

Taylor Martinez through 3 seasons:

506 / 852 (59.4%) for 6,591 yards, 46 TD, 27 INT, 135.64 QBR

Russel Wilson through 3 seasons:

682 / 1180 (57.8%) for 8,545 yards, 76 TDs, 26 INT, 136.4 QBR

Going into their senior seasons, Russel had thrown the ball a much larger volume of times, but Taylor is almost identically as effective (didn't include rushing stats where Taylor wipes the floor over Wilson).

Why is it a joke? Do you know any NFL scouts? Because Bo Pelini does, and is on record as having talked to them about his quarterback. I'll take the word of a man who actually has a professional knowledge of the game and has talked to others who also have professional knowledge of the game over your or my uninformed and, let's be honest, ignorant opinions.

Yeah, okay, stats are similar. But, are you honestly trying to tell me that Taylor is on the same level as Russell Wilson and could be as good or better than him in the pros?

No, I am not saying that. Russell Wilson is a starting quarterback in the NFL. Taylor Martinez is going into his senior season in college. I am saying that Taylor Martinez, going into his senior season, is equally as good as Russel Wilson was going into his senior season of college.

RW made a huge jump that senior season and was a dramatically improved player. Nothing tells me that TM isn't capable of the same.

Russell's INT to pass attempts ratio is much better than Taylor's. I believe that gives Russell a HUGE advantage over Taylor.

I believe Taylor will play in the NFL....I just don't know where as of right now. Let's let the season play out and see where the chips fall for him.

You do have a point there man. Russell made a huge leap. I remember dissing on Russell (right when he entered Wisconsin) saying that he throws plenty of INTS and his completion percentage was nothing to worry about when looking at his junior #s. Well, during his senior season, he proved me and many others wrong. We need to see how this season pans out for Taylor.

Taylor Martinez is nothing like Russell Wilson other than the fact they both play qb and are athletic. Wilson is top tier when it comes to every quarterback attribute: arm strength, accuracy, footwork, pocket awareness. Not to mention his preparation, leadership skills, and mind for the game is as good or better than anyone in the game. It's pretty regularly thrown around that if he were 6'2" he would've been drafted somewhere in the top 3 of the 2012 draft. College stats are completely meaningless in this case. Different offenses for Wilson with much less margin of error for the qb (west coast at NCST and pro style at WIS, which by the way he mastered that playbook in 3 weeks), and a much less talented supporting staff at NCST, who he carried for his three years, making significant progress each year. The one year he had talent on par with Nebraska, he set the NCAA record for passing efficiency. With all that said, if Taylor makes the same strides at the position as he did last year, he has a shot at the pros.
