“Every snap, every moment that I get out there is a huge deal for me.”

Oh, I get it.......

Some of you are still hurting over the raccoon incident.

It all makes sense now. We've got a bunch of PETA Activists on the board.

The raccoon probably would have been 3rd on the depth chart this year!
Nah, that's a red flag......hes too physically limited.
I agree but he was also...

1. Fearless

2. Played like he had rabies

3. Would literally die for his team

4. And he was born and raised in Nebraska!

It seems that my comments about Gangwish have set off a sh*t storm about his "abilities" and what it means for NU. I agree that it is a "cool story" that a guy who couldn't even make 1st or 2nd team All-State in high school has worked himself to be Lifter of the Year and put him in line to start for the Blackshirts as a senior. He deserves credit for working hard, persevering, and becoming a vocal leader.

But, I still have huge concerns about him being a starting DE on the defense. If he is starting, I don't see the defense being all that great. So many fans are complaining that NU isn't at the level of the top teams. I haven't done in-depth research on the "top teams", but I don't think many of them have a former walk-on as their starting DE, or even within their 2-deep. You know why? Because those top teams are able to recruit great talent and develop that talent into star players. We want NU to be at the level of those top teams, but at the same time we want to celebrate the fact that NU has a former walk-on with 1 year of meaningful playing time starting at DE. That doesn't make sense to me.

Another thing that doesn't make sense, is that fans will deride a guy like Banderas for 2 years for being slow and underachieving and big concern if he is starting at LB. Banderas was a highly recruited athlete coming out of high school. But, since Gangwish is a walk-on from Podunk, NE fans are going to "root harder" for him.

If the defense isn't all that great, it won't be because Jack Gangwish is the starting defensive end.

It will be because the defense hasn't been good or great for about four/five years now and they happen to be starting over in an entirely new system with new coaches this year.

We still hope for at the least IMPROVEMENT on what has been some pretty disappointing efforts in recent history.

I hardly know the two deep rosters for teams around the nation and I won't pretend to. What walk ons are making an impact where, I wouldn't know. What I do know is that "star players" at DE are not found everywhere. Four and five star guys don't equate to instant stardom.

It seems you're main issue is that you don't feel a walk on should ever be starting? As if its an indication of failures in recruiting. Sure, Moss would probabaly be an upgrade. Moss appeared to be highly talented. Dont devalue hard work and player defelopment though. Nebraska has had several former walk-ons find success. Some of those offenses and defenses that included those former walk-ons turned out to be very good.

We worried about the overall defense last year even with a 1st round NFL draft pick starting at defensive end, the worries will be there defensively regardless, but within the new scheme i think guys are going to have an opportunity to display their skills a bit more.

There's a great video on another thread about how Gregory was used/misused all season long. This is why I've said multiple times, don't judge these kids too harshly based upon statistics in the previous scheme. You don't know what was being asked of them.

This applies to Banderas as well.

I think Banderas will flourish in the new scheme. As do I think Gangwish will.

One thing I do know for sure is that neither of these kids is "limited physically".

True, I agree with you, but are you the real Jack Gangwish?

The DE situation, the Dude, is that we need depth.

We needed depth last year too.

That didn't suddenly mean Randy Gregory and Greg McMullen were red flags or physically limited. It just meant there wasn't a lot of experience or talent behind them.
If we're starting a guy like Gangwish, I think it indicates we lack some talent at that position too, not just depth.
Gregory would have started on any team in the country, and McMullen/Collins/Valentine would start on a majority of teams. That's why nobody is saying that stuff about them.

Gangwish isn't that type of player. Not everyone is, and that's okay.

I think that's kind of where the disagreement started. I've said how I feel about it and we disagree.

I think Gangwish will do just fine. I don't think he's limited physically and I don think its a red flag that hes starting. I'm glad he's a Husker and I'm looking forward to seeing him on the field at DE this year. Sounds like his teammates and coaches think he's gonna do well out there also.

So that's where we're at.

Only time will tell.

Huskerboard now knows how you feel about it and they know how I feel about it. It appears I feel the same way as the rest of the team and the coaches, and you feel opposite. Some agree with me, some agree with you. I wouldn't expect the coaches to say if they in fact agreed with you as well. So.....I guess we're gonna find out in a long 5 months.

Isn't Banker's "he's a guy that does his job" pretty much coach speak for "serviceable"?

I think he'll be serviceable.

Serviceable. I hate that term. I still don't really know what it means, but every time one of you uses it, I imagine you being on your knees.

"It's the little things," Pelini told the World-Herald. "He's a really good pass rusher. The details aren't quite there with Randy. He's got a lot to learn. That's to be expected. He's raw right now, but the potential is there. "

That's "coach speak" for "he's gonna be a top 5-10 NFL draft pick". Or is Randy Gregory "serviceable"?

I don't know, coach speak can be a funny thing to try to read into. Like I said, the great thing is we will get to make our own judgment here in 5 months. I'm hoping Gangwish surprises some you guys that are doubting him for whatever reason. As for those reasons, I haven't heard much. I've seen that he's a walk on so he shouldn't be playing, he's physically limited-which is also a joke, and that's about it.

If he's just as physically gifted as Gregory, are we assuming he's going to put up RG numbers and earn All-Conference honors as well?

Or is he physically limited?

Most label Gregory as a physical freak.
If that's the standard, then the majority of the world is physcally limited. I don't think this is a reasonable line of thought.

As far as numbers go, Gregory didn't really have insane stats. Still, I never said Gangwish will put up those same numbers. I never even compared the two. The reference to Gregory was simply a reference to your use of the "coach speak" thing, which I thought I found a good way to show that you can find just about any "coach speak" to justify your own argument. It means nothing. A coach is hesitatnt to laud a player with too much praise thus to not create expectations or ego. A coach generally won't tell you outright that he doesn't expect much from a player either.

My expectations of Gangwish are strictly factual. His coaches said he's doing great. His teammates say he's improving. He's 280 pounds of solid badass Cornhusker. He's Lifter of the Year as a junior. He has been very vocal as a leader. He looked much better toward the end of last season. I'm a big fan of the kid.

So far as I said, the only reasons I have seen from any of you guys as to why you expect him to fail is that he is a walk on, he s physically limited, and now you say he is not as physically gifted as Randy Gregory. To which i say yes, he's a walk on. That doesn't mean he doesn't belong at starting DE. He's not limited physically. He's not Randy Gregory....that doesn't mean he's not good. It just means he's not a physical freak that will be a top 5-10 draft pick. Join the club.

By the way, where are you coming up with this stuff? Literally nobody has said any of these things.

Come on Dude you're better than that.
