Everybody clap their hands

Dantonio's reply is so douchey. If the MSU defenders were clapping while we were set, they should have been penalized for simulating the snap count. The miscues with the snap make a lot more sense now.

I don't really understand what the B1G office can do about it after the fact though.
How else should he reply? That's exactly how I'd expect Pelini to respond as well. You can't cry about getting distracted by clapping in a stadium full of 80,000 people clapping and not get called out.
The stadium clapping, and clapping at the line of scrimmage are completely different sounds. And it isn't that the fans were clapping, Dantonio essentially admitted his defense was clapping right before the snap and said "So what if we simulated the snap count... we can set our defense however we want". How is this any different than simulating a verbal snap count?

It's good that it is getting pointed out, but it doesn't help you from getting manhandled by their front 7.I distinctly remember Wiscy doing this same thing on D against Ohio St a year ago. Didn't stop Ohio st from beating Wiscy....didn't look like it caused much issue for Ohio St...
I dont know.. if MSU players all know when their linebacker is going to clap.. they go and the o-line might be a second behind.

Obviously this doesnt explain everything but it is like the d-line knowing the snap count and having that extra second.

Most times i dont blame something like this for a loss.. but those missed snaps were in big spots...
Exactly.

I'm not saying our coaching staff couldn't have done something to help the situation.

However, if the defense knows pretty much when the ball is going to be snapped and the QB doesn't even know and he hasn't gone through his pre snap reads it could be a major issue. If the Line is a split second behind it gives that DE that extra step to get around the tackle. What if it's a play where Tommy actually should have put them in a different play to take advantage of the defense but he can't because the ball is snapped early?

This has a potential to be huge in this game.

I actually like it that Bo brought this out on the call. It put Dantonio on the spot on his call. It also warns every team playing MSU going forward that this is their little trick if you use a clap to snap the ball.

That said, why wasn't our O line being able to see what is going on and report it to the coaching staff?

I wonder if it was reported during the game. Bo mentioned that it should have been called and wasn't.

Bo doesn't strike me as the guy who is going to hold back anything from the officials.

Eh...MSU is a douchy team...have been prior to DeAntonio...maybe the culture at that school.

That said you can't go on the road with a clap and expect everything to go perfect everytime. I'm still in favor of the silent count as has been mentioned several times already in this thread.

I guess the only thing I would say toward MSU is if you're clearing cheating (rule book says you can't simulate the snap) then you're really not as confident in yourselves as you think you are. You would have beat us fair and square. Why taint it? Is winning really everything or is there a right way to conduct business?

For the record, and before anyone gets into "excuses" or whatever, this is not an excuse for why we lost. We lost because we played like dootie for 3.75 quarters of that game. Play better, no amount of Sparty tricks will harm you.

This is a fun little oddity to discover, nothing more.

FWIW Pelini also said this: "When you make adjustments to make sure it doesn't happen again, you have to make sure we're on the same page."
So true and why it makes it very hard to change something like this during a game and where it hasn't been practiced.

I will guarantee you that if we get a rematch in December, this will not cause problems again.

Well. All 3 of them clapping issues, what if one transpires into a score in a game we lost by 5. What if they quit clapping for the 4th qtr, and what you know, we're scoring 24 points in a 10 minute stretch. What if.................

This is very intriguing. But I gotta say, we almost deserve for using such a stupid and easily imitated method of calling for the snap.

I'm sure it was, but that doesn't mean the officials are going to do anything about it. Every week all big 10 teams send video of things they believe to be rules violations into the big 10 HQ. Dantonio is just miffed that he may have got caught. The got away with it once the probably won't again. Trust me if Dantonio thought Nebraska or any other team was doing something illegal he would be making a huge stink about it.
