expansion news

Populations go with the economy, at least here in Michigan. The drop was very similar to what happened here in the 80's, after which the population came back and continued to grow. This drop started with the economic troubles of 2002 and again with economic improvement the population is rebounding. Those charts are dated already assuming that the populations will leave indefinitely and never return. The last two years the population here at least has been growing again much like it recovered after the mid 80's.

That's good news, to say the least. And I do think that Nebraska is poised for a population boom soon, relatively speaking.

...what's interesting IMO is that the B1G has to walk a fine line with assisting Maryland in this, with the talk of restructuring the future of NCAA Athletics and it currently being an ideological battle between the Big XII and SEC vs. the B1G and Pac-12, with the ACC providing the deciding vote...

All this tells me is how confident the ACC is in keeping the rest of the schools in conference if they let Maryland walk without giving up a pound of flesh.

I don't see anyone leaving, not with a $54,000,000 buyout for leaving. Plus, ACC is getting close to getting ND as a full member (including football - from what I hear they're just waiting on the NBC deal to run out). Restructure the TV deal once ND is in and it will be a good bit more profitable as there's ND alum & fans everywhere.

UVA was about as close to B1G as possible but lacked a dance partner.

Didn't Maryland leave with a 54 mil exit fee? If the ACC didn't fear anyone else leaving then this wouldn't be taking so long. Its a message to other schools letting them know the mess they will be getting into if they try to get out.

The Clemson Insider is where I found that about getting ND as an insider - it was a while back (during all the expansion talk), so I can't find the actual article.

UVA couldn't bail without Va Tech. Virginia's legislature forced UVA to block Miami & Boston College addition in 2004 w/o VT (I think it had to be unanimous at that time).

My understanding of the Maryland deal is that they're trying tactic after tactic to get out and are prolonging it hoping the ACC will settle and take whatever they can get. They were in horrible financial shape before all of this.

UVA couldn't leave VaTech in the dying Big East. VaTech would either be in the ACC or could be moving on to the SEC(no secret the SEC doesn't want to stay at 14)

UVA and VaTech can be separated. they have only been in the same conference for 10 years. the politics has to do with making sure they are both in SOLID conferences.

I believe Maryland is counter suing for 150 mil and from what Maryland fans are saying(taking their bias out of it) they have a good point

They are not confident but the lawsuit is detached from that. The ACC has a match play bet that pays up to $50 million in the courtroom casino, might as well play it.
