Fall Camp Position Battles - Special Teams

Zack Darlington confirmed he's the No. 1 holder this season and the emergency quarterback who can preserve Patrick O'Brien's redshirt in case of an equipment mishap.

Punt return and kick return battles remain up in the air, Read said. At punt returner, Nebraska is looking at Jordan Westerkamp, Stanley Morgan, De'Mornay Pierson-El and JD Spielman. At kick returner, Mikale Wilbon, Tre Bryant, Terrell Newby and Spielman are in the mix. Read said kick return will be "revamped" for 2016; he didn't provide many details.

Ah okay. I wonder if the plan is still for him to be the 3rd string QB if that role is needed for say, a half quarter of mop-up duty, or an entire series where the backup goes through concussion protocol or something.

Latest word: What was settled became shaken up after the July death of All-Big Ten punter Sam Foltz. Caleb Lightbourn eventually won the job after a competition with fellow freshman Isaac Armstrong. The kicking already is in good hands with Drew Brown, and Jordan Ober returns as the long snapper.

It sounds like Ober was really worth the schollie, he is a professional at what he does, down to the rotations on the ball back to the holder.

Im glad we recruited a punter whew
I remember there were a number of people questioning the recruitment of Lightbourn when we already had Foltz. Even if Foltz had been available, Caleb could have spent a year redshirting and fine tuning his punting. Too bad we don't have that luxury any more.
