Favorite Back-up

Doug Dubose - Great back. He was part back up, part starter, a lot injured but one of my all time favorite IB's to watch play. Still managed to string together back to back 1000 yard seasons playing with Jeff Smith, Keith Jones, Rathman etc. Went on to pay for the Niners. Too bad he was hooked on pain killers after his knee injury and never really got life back together.

I loved that announcer during that era (in a deep non-emotional/committed voice): "now the starting lineup for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. #22--Doug. DuBose."

I wore number 22 for like 4 years cuz I loved how that sounded. Plus, he was a stud.

Good choice. Was it a Missouri game where Gill was out and Rozier played hurt, and he pulled it out for us?

The most obvious one of all would of course be Brook Berringer.

Cody Green, even though he transferred, but he managed a game very well despite the feeling one got that he was over his head.

I was a fan of Tim Brungardt when I was a kid because I had a #32 jersey inherited from my older brother (which I think was actually an old IM Hipp jersey) and he also ran the most awesome fake field goal against Oklahoma once.

Joe Adams was a backup center who I would see frequently as a kid.... my dad at the time (early 80s) worked at Ben Simon's in downtown Lincoln in the Atrium, where a lot of players shopped for menswear and shoes. Roger Craig came in a lot.

For me this one is easy...Brook Berringer.

Not only was he my favorite back-up in Nebraska history, he ranks right up there with my favorite Huskers of all time. Both on & off the field he humbly represented what it truly meant to be a Nebraska Cornhusker. This Husker fan misses you Brook, but will never forget what you did for this program, and the example that you set for others.

Sure enough. Good catch. I wasn't aware of the Mizzou game. Looked it up. Here's a recap:

When Husker quarterback Turner Gill left the game with a mild concussion late in the first half and Missouri leading, 7-6, Nebraska's 122nd consecutive sellout crowd (76,406) and a regional ABC television audience sensed a strong possibility of an upset by the visiting Tigers.

That sensation was a little stronger six minutes into the fourth quarter when Mizzou's Brad Burditt kicked a 51-yard field goal to give the Tigers a 13-9 lead. But seldom-used senior quarterback Bruce Mathison had his legs under him by that time and he took the Huskers 70 yards in 11 plays for a 16-13 lead with 4:45 left. After a Brent Evans interception, Mathison capped the Husker comeback by sprinting 16 yards to score at the 2:36 mark for an insurmountable 23-13 lead.

I-back Mike Rozier, not expected to play because of a painful hip pointer, came off the bench to rush for 139 yards and earned Big Eight player-of-the-week honors.

I will say Brook, but it should be noted that you could say almost anybody. Tommie Frazier was a back up to Mike Grant.

Doug Dubose was a great back. Never played his senior year due to knee injury, but he was a starter his Jr. year so he doesn't count on this thread IMO. Lets go back a few years to Craig Johnson and Tim Wirth at I-back. They were both career backups. I remember watching CJ at Lawrence have about 160 yds rushing in mop up duty against KU when I was about 12 years old. Tim Wirth was just fun to watch. He was only about 5'6" but built like a brick sh!t house.
