Fervor for annual NU-OU game has died down

Osborne was the Cornhuskers’ coach when the Big 12 Conference was forming in the mid 1990s. When it was decided there would be North and South Divisions, Osborne pushed for a format that would have allowed teams to designate a rival in the opposite division and play every year. Oklahoma, which considers Texas its biggest rival, did not support the proposal.
But...., but I thought we had something special Oklahoma? You're leaving me for Texas aren't you?

........whatever

When Barry Switzer was reached for comment regarding Oklahoma's comment about Texas being their biggest rival he replied:

THEY DID WHAT???

We all know that we will probably never play them every year again so it's time for us to move on and just deal with the schedule that we have every season.

That was one of the sacrifices we made to be in a larger conference...unfortunately it ruined a one of the best rivalries in college football. But everyone would have picked OU to play from the North ...so having everyone pick one rival from the other division would have been hard.

All sorts of things mitigated against the NU-OU rivalry. The much discussed b12 gig is but one. Also consider that it has been a long time since both teams were good at the same time. We have been comparatively non-competitive for ca. 6-7 years (or 8-9 depending on your standards) and that has some overlap with OU when they were down --- they were not much in the mid-late 90's (when we were good). So it has been many years since both OU and NU were good at the same time. That is enough to at least suspend the rivalry.

If we want it to be a rivalry again all we have to do is get our sh!t together - which we will - and play them every year in the Big 12 title game.

True story. I want that rivalry back. I hate this crappy colorado thing we have going.
colorado?..........never heard of um.
You must remember colorado. That one team that beat the hell out of us at the end of the season last year preventing us from going to a bowl game. That colorado.

The actual OU/NU rivalry died when Switzer was fired or quit. It just never was the same when we could see two football geniuses going at it year after year. The 2001 game was nice and all, but it just never did feel the same as when TO and Switzer were on the sidelines.
