First 4 years, a comparison between 4 Husker coaches

Your pointing out what has been stated in every single thread that has been posted for the last two weeks. I think everyone is under the same category, that the team needs work. That link was a waste of my time honestly.

But then again, Bo is in the same exact shoes as they had when they entered the program. :rolleyes:

Hadn't seen a comparative break down like this on the threads. Trust me I have looked.

 
lo country, sure you can go off of numbers and stats, but the stats don't show how how the program was, when that coach took control. Devaney, he simply built the platform for NU. Osborne was handed a great team, with great talent with coaches and players. He continued the success, with his own ups and downs, until Solich took over. Solich also inherited a solid program, which he did great things with. He had great recruiters, players and coaching staff, and besides, he got to learn what he needed under Osborne. Then Callahan came, and we all know that story, and I would rather not live it again by explaining that one. Then Bo, inherited a job that would be too big for any head coach with no experience to handle. I expected losing seasons when he came in, but I knew we were making a great decision. Instead he proved me wrong, by winning at least 9 games a season. He comes in with Callahan's class and coaches. A few were good, but were never formed into perfection, until Pelini got his hands on them. He has also had to go out and find his own coaches to help reign him to success. Again, not easy for a rookie HC to do, as no big name would want to work under a rookie, but he has made strides, and continues to, with getting bigger name coaches in, which will help out with recruiting. Like Coach Kaz and Coach Joseph. Stats are just a bunch of numbers, unless you know the stories behind them.

I think what sticks out to most Husker fans are three numbers:

Record against Ranked teams on the road

Like some have mentioned, where is Callahan?

At least Bo is being compared to Devaney, Osborne, and Solich. That must mean people see similarties, potential, or something. I wouldn't compare my local H&R Block financial rep to Warren Buffett, but they are both "financial guys".

What I'm getting at is that instead of letting "Bo be Bo", people are trying the constant comparisons. To me, this means one of two things.

1) You see great potential in Bo and want to see him do great things. Well, then he needs time to get his program, not just his roster, in order. That takes more than 2,3,4, even 5 years....

2) You hate Bo! And you feel that if you hold him to the gold standard, he will always be a failure. Thus, you will always have a reason to want him gone.

However, I would like to bring a third option into the discussion. How about we compare him to his "peers", current college football coaches. This is where Bo blows everyone out of the water with the exception of a few, e.g. Saban, Urban, and a couple others. Look at Bo's record over the last 4.5 years and see where it is in comparison.

The Huskers have a GOOD FOOTBALL COACH!!!

 
You know, most folks have been attacking Bo's road game losses this season and last season. How come there is no comparison with the 4 coaches when it comes to those records? How come Callahan records aren't in this debate as well?

Because the comparisons don't matter. This is a "discussion" pieces, aka "reaction column". Dirk even said in the article, I'm paraphrasing: 'you can't compare today to 40 years ago in the world of college football'. But yet, Dirk goes on to do just that.

Well for s--ts n giggles, here is a breakdown of the Devaney, Osborne, Solich, Pelini and Callahan's away records for the first 5 years at Nebraska, cept for Callahan who only has 4 years. I did not include Con Championship games or bowl games.

BD 15 - 3

TO 14 - 6 - 2

FS 13 - 10

BC 7 - 13

BP 13 - 8
