First Half Woes - How do they get corrected

Okay, so I spent probably half my time watching our game and half my time watching Bama's game as my hatred for Saban is nearly equal to my love of the Huskers.

Texas A&M has a new coaching staff and is playing in the toughest conference in football. They went into the #1 team's house in front of over 100,000 fans and played loose, tough and generally mistake-free football against the defending national champs.

We on the other hand continue to lay an egg in the first half against inferior opponents in the friendly confines of our own stadium. Say what you will, but Penn State doesn't have near the talent we have.

My question is, why do we look so utterly incompetent in the first half? Is our preparation during the week flawed? Are we just coming out tight and it takes us awhile to settle in? Do we need nap time like Northwestern?(sarcasm)

Our defense was mis-aligned a lot in the first half, then suddenly it gets corrected after half-time. I hear a lot of people say that our defense is too complicated but that seems like it's all been speculation up to this point. Offensively I didn't notice a whole lot of adjustments at halftime. Seems like we pretty much stuck with the game plan and wore them down. It's not like we didn't move the ball in the first half; we just stalled in the red zone and went with more power running out of the I-formation in the 2nd half in the red zone and in short yardage situations.

It's year 5 and we just seem so undisciplined. I realize we've had some coaching changes, but what happens if we're seeing the same thing 2 years from now? What needs to change to improve this? We can get by with the same crap for the next couple weeks because our opponents are just that bad and we'll be 10-2 when we re-play Wisconsin unless we have a 2009 Iowa State meltdown. I think if we come out slow against Wisky like we have been they'll make us pay the 2nd time around because their offensive line is playing much better than they were when we first faced them.

I remember in 1999 when we had the fumbleitis problem and Solich couldn't figure out how to solve that; sometimes things just pop up and you can't get them figured out. But this has kinda been an issue for awhile now and if we could just come out fast we'd be coasting to victories most weeks. Our offense is good enough to average 45 points a game.

Just looking for some people's thoughts on this. It's going to be a boring end to the season with the Gophers and the underachievers to the east as our last 2 games.

Bo said in the post game that he called some defenses that did not put the players in the best position to defend. Some of it had to do with asking the players to do something they weren't comfortable doing. He said that when they went back to something they were more comfortable with and more familiar then they did much better. He said there were a few player mistakes as well.

In the old days when players struggled, they would simplify things for them so they could at least play fast. Too much thinking makes you slow.

I actually think the Gophers are a dangerous team. They have some talent on the defensive line and hit pretty hard. They are playing a freshmen QB know that has been pretty consistent and a good game manager which has helped them. They tend to fade a bit in the 2nd half due to depth issues.

Its clearly a preperation issue. How do you fix it? who knows but if I were Bo I'd be getting a consultant to review game week prep to see if there is something that could be improved.

I have no answers. Just frustration. We aren't that far from being 0-6 in the B1G. Michigan is the only team we pulled away from, and who knows what happens without Bellomy. Glad we're 5-1, but I really wish we could put together a full effort. I watched a KSU team filled with 2 and 3 star recruits dominate a pretty decent TCU team from start to finish. No falling behind big early, no crazy fourth quarter comeback. Just solid fundamental football from start to finish. I wish we were at least showing significant improvement as a team. I don't really see it.

I actually think we would punch KSU in the mouth and bring them back to earth if we played them.

Didn't mean to imply that. Just saying the KSU, with very little talent for a top 25 team, is playing incredibly well, incredibly consistently, against some really good teams.

TCU is good but not as good as KSU. They must have some talent to be the #2 team in the nation.

Husker fans have grown to hate this word, but it all comes down to one thing:

EXECUTION!!!

We don't do it in the first half, but we do in the 2nd half. I guess if I had to choose one half for us to execute, it would be the 2nd. I just wish we would do it the entire game.
