First time in Lincoln for USM game

And along the booze food line, if you wear your OU gear I'm sure you'll get more than a few offers to have a beer or eats some grub at some tailgates.

Thanks for the replies. The building could be construed as phallic, but check out the photo of the Capitol from Tallahassee, FL. That, in my opinion, looks more like genitals than the other.

On another note, when is the tunnel walk (i.e. when should I stop drinking beer and be in the stadium?)

So I'm a lifelong Sooner fan, but I married into a Nebraska family! My wife attended an OU game with me a few years ago, so I decided to return the favor. My wife and I have never been to Lincoln, and she has only seen Nebraska play in person once (unfortunately for her, a loss). I'll admit, I'm excited to experience Memorial Stadium for the first time.

Any recommendations on what to do before game day? We arrive on Thursday afternoon, and I'd like to see if we can get into Memorial Stadium before Sat. Are there daily tours, etc? Also, is the Osborne Athletic Complex worth the time to walk through?

For game day: where's the best place to tailgate? We want to cab it from our hotel with some beer and snacks, but I have no clue if there are any laws, etc on drinking near the stadium. We don't have tickets yet, and stub hub is pricey. Any other ideas or experiences on getting decent tickets? I'm trying to avoid the "overhang" on the sideline where the obstructed view is if I can help it. All else being equal, I'll thrown down a decent amount to sit in decent seats. How is sitting in the endzone seats?

Finally, any recommendations on where to go post game for live music?

I appreciate any additional ideas you may have, I want this to be a great trip for my wife!

Cheers,

Rich
Hey Rich,

You married into a Nebraska loving family so I guess that disproves Bill Callahan's "f'ing hillbillies" comment...j/k. :D

In all seriousness though, since you're getting into Lincoln on Thursday hit Misty's at 66th(?) & Havelock on Friday night for the prime rib. On Saturday, before the game hit the Watering Hole for some wings and beer. After the game, any place downtown will be gold.

One of my personal recommendations (if you guys like to drink alcohol) is Duffy's Tavern. Get a fishbowl of your favorite cocktail. Trust me it is worth it.

It's anywhere from 3-7 minutes before kickoff, just depends when the team is going to walk out. If you're in your seat about 10-15 minutes before game time you should be fine, and you'll see all the introductory stuff.

Fishbowl of alcohol? Does this imply a massive drink!?

15 min prior to kickoff...thanks!
Massive? Oh yea.

Oh no, do the fishbowl either Friday night before the game or Saturday night after the game. You do a fishbowl before the game and you probably won't remember a thing. LOL.

And a point of clarification: A fishbowl is best when shared among three to five people. Drinking a fishbowl by yourself...lmao!

I've tailgated in Lot 12 (the "U" lot right next to the Coliseum) for the last 15 years, and I can tell you that some of those corporate tailgates get so big that if you are confident, you can just walk up to their tailgate and get in line for some food. No one will know the difference, or probably really care even if they did! This lot is also a good place to see some ex-Husker stars/coaches. I regularly see and chat with Eric Crouch, Tommie Frazier, Milt Tenopir and a couple other lesser knowns. My tailgate is typically a smaller one toward the back of that lot, but we always welcome the random passerby who asks for a beve or brat. If you don't want to "risk" that, the Embassy Suites has a nice outdoor beer garden with live music that is a quick walk to the stadium. Also, indoors at the Embassy Suites gets pretty rowdy leading up to games. Additionally, checkout Barry's, which is now under new management and is supposed to remain a solid pre-game destination.

One thing I never see anyone mention, but I think is pretty cool and "outsiders" should see is, just prior to the game, most of the band plays a set for thousands of people right outside the Westbrook Music Building (just south of the stadium). It is loud, awesome and always gives me goosebumps.

As for carrying alcohol around, the general rule is: Have it in an inconspicuous container, and DONT leave the tailgate areas with it. No cops or campus cops are going to give you a hard time at all in the main tailgating areas. But I have seen it with my own eyes, cops are on the lookout for people once they leave a tailgate area to go to another tailgate area, or to head toward the stadium, they will nab and ticket you if you have a can of beer or a cup.

Zoo bar and Duffy's are great bars for live music.... but not on a gameday. If you want live music after a game, you'll want to hit up The Red 9.

Power-I, thanks for the heads-up on the cups/beer. Good to know

Lyons, thanks for the tip on the beer; we love local brews.

Nobody, I've read about Red 9...I think we are going to hit it up later in the pm post game!

Thanks again everyone for the advice!
