Okay, because I'm so nice. Although I don't know how much help this will be.

 

Hint: He didn't spend any because he couldn't.

 
after finding the box the man tucked it a safe place and then jumped in his car to see what he could spend it on - while doing this task he was involved in a crash and was hospitilized in a coma - after 5 years in a coma he awoke (thus he could not tell anyone or spend any of the money!!!!)

Was the fact that he couldn't spend it and didn't tell anyone about it because some other party had a legal claim to it?

Was the man who found it an immigrant? If so, was he a naturalized citizen? Are either of those questions relevant at all?
