Big 12 blog pointed me to this note on some recruiting news in HuskerExtra:

Pelini and his staff will put on a coaches clinic for the local high school coaches in the Jacksonville area on Dec. 27 — a good way to perhaps get a foot in the door for some future recruits.
“Just to open up to the coaches, the Florida coaches, so they get to know us, so they’re able to put a face with the name,” Pelini said. “It's good PR. It’s good for relationships and that's what recruiting’s all about.”

Nebraska has one 2009 commitment from the state of Florida — cornerback DeAndre Byrd from Tallahassee.

Putting a face to the name and showing the coaches of the high school that Bo and his assistants care about the kids. More than PR, it lets the High School coaches get a feel for Pelini and shows them the type of person he is, a win win in any situation.

Coaches watchMore than 50 unfamiliar faces crowded the sidelines during Nebraska's first practice in Jacksonville Saturday to get a live look at the Huskers.

In an effort to build recruiting relationships, Nebraska opened up its workout to local high school coaches and invited the visitors to a post-practice clinic. The Huskers haven't appeared in a postseason bowl in the state of Florida since the 1998 Orange Bowl against Tennessee.

After they finished practice, the NU assistants — using whiteboards, footballs and Nebraska equipment managers as props — split up and gave position-specific tutorials for the intrigued attendees.

The enthusiastic Mike Ekeler physically demonstrated some of his linebacker drills. The more mild-mannered John Papuchis sat before a semi-circle of coaches, calmly offering up his advice.

All of the coaches, no matter their demeanor, hope that the clinic will benefit the program in the future.

"We recruit down here. It's an area that we want to be better in," offensive coordinator Shawn Watson said. "We just want to extend our hand to the Florida coaches and the coaches in this area — let them know that we're good people and we hope they like our product."

I'm old an computer illiterate, but the following is from a Jacksonville newspaper:

"After the practice, Nebraska's coaches stayed behind to conduct a clinic for area high school coaches. They were invited before Christmas via e-mail.

Nebraska broke the coaches into small groups (offensive line, defensive line, secondary, etc.) and talked Xs and Os, drills and training methods. A Nebraska sports information official said the coaches usually do this in bowl games in recruiting hotbeds such as Florida and Texas.

Pretty smart. But also a nice gesture."

 
Would have been nice for Bo to be apart of this if not for the unfortunate circumstances he had to deal with first. He could further his Florida connections like the one he has with Lincoln HS.

Bell and Jacksonville
Class of 2010 wide receiver Javon Bell (Jacksonville, Fla./Ribault) has been getting attention from a number of colleges early in the process, including Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. Bell had 29 catches for 794 yards and 14 touchdowns this past season, earning All-First Coast and All-Conference honors. Bell also plays basketball.

Speaking of Jacksonville, according to at least one college coach that recruits the city and surrounding areas, there is a lot of talent in the area in the coming classes, so look for the area to be on the upswing in terms of total number of high end Division I-A signees in the coming classes.
