Fourth quarter futility: Tmart or Beck ?

Beck's play calling was certainly questionable. 65% of the blame. Cotton for stincking it up as an OL couch 20%. The S&C coach for not having the big guys up front in better shape 10%. Taylor, thought he played well but he gets the last 5%.

we shouldve ran it more with 6minutes left, but beck decided against that. bad calls on that drive, hopefully next time he will do that. other than that...again the offense will be fine, i am not worried at all about them.

 
This is the first post I have made since the game... After a tough loss I usually like to step away from the board for a bit just to kind of get over it and avoid stewing in the negativity, but nonetheless...

This was totally on Beck. Everyone in Husker Nation knows Taylor Martinez isn't going to become Peyton Manning or Tom Brady any time soon. So it amazes me that when Beck goes into panic mode, he repeatedly tries to put the game squarely on Taylor's shoulders. I know he looked great against SMU, and totally understand the OC's faith in his starting QB. But for the love of all that is holy, if Beck thinks Taylor is going to trun into John Elway any time soon, he's delusional.

He has flashed glimpses of being a terrific passer... it just is never going to be there consistently. Being on the road probably only exacerbated Taylor's nerves. So I just can't understand why Beck continues to throw Taylor to the wolves and ask him to carve up a defense through the air that was PROVING to be susceptible to our RUNNING game.

If the D can't stop Ameer, or Heard, or Taylor, or Cross, or Burk or whoever else we trot out there, why do you go away from that? Why do you not protect your QB and ask him to play his strengths? That would actually have given us a great chance at winning that game, defensive disaster aside. It would've also been a lot better for Taylor's psyche than having him feel like he let the whole team down because the defense keyed in on a one dimensional attack.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm sure as hell getting sick of Beck shooting himself in the foot with playcalling in big games when we go down (@ Wiscy, @ Michigan, @ UCLA). He actually showed some moxie vs. OSU last year, bringing in the diamond. But the thought of us continuing to blow our biggest games on national TV and continuing to have an also-ran not-over-the-hump team while Beck learns on the job makes me sick to my stomach.

I'm giving T-Mart the benefit of the doubt based on O-line play at the end of the game and play calling at the end of the game, but yes he did regress in the 2nd half which should be expected. I don't think folks understand how important muscle-memory is when you are trying to change something from the way you've done it. I also don't think we are giving UCLA's defense enough credit and we tend to do this with a loss.................it's always what did we do wrong, not what they did right.

+1. I agree with all of it. I think we're going to find UCLA may be a better team than we had expected.

 
I was curious why Braylon didn't get more touches.

He looked pretty speedy and made a few guys miss on the few carries he received.

While you're sarcastic, it was terribly executed. To think that we could 'sneak' an onside kick when they were flat out expecting one was a pretty embarrassing way to end the game.

I just saw this on espnu-Wisconsin just dismissed their OLine coach! Wow-I didn't think people did that! Would that happen at NU?

wow for a school that prides themselves in their oline tradition they didn't put up with it for long thats for sure. not saying that nu doesn't pride themselves in the oline but i just can't see that happening here midseason

I was hoping we would slow it down and grind it out in the 4th Qtr. Beck is the reason UCLA ran 94 plays. His 3 passes and punt were killers. He needs to be more patient in his play calling and let game come to him.
