Fresno State player suspended for hit on Kyler Reed

Assistant Coach
DENVER (AP) -- Fresno State defensive back Terrance Dennis was suspended for one game by the Western Athletic Conference for committing a flagrant personal foul last week against Nebraska.
He says Dennis should have been ejected for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Nebraska tight end Kyler Reed with 4 seconds remaining in the first half of the Cornhuskers' 42-29 victory last Saturday in Lincoln, Neb.

Imagine that. A conference commish suspending players for things they actually should be suspended for.
Meh. I didn't think the hit on Reed was that bad. Maybe it's because I saw it live from 50 rows up and not on TV with replay, though.

I thought Martin's hit on that OSU kid last year was far more devastating, and I didn't agree with that suspension. Don't agree with this one, either, based on what I saw.

Eh the penalty was enough. He clearly went helmet to helmet. He had no intention of going low but then he also wasn't looking for the ball so I think his intent WAS to prevent a completion.

I saw it both in the stadium and on TV and it's clear he did lead with his helmet and did go helmet-to-helmet on Reed.

Right, but was it as bad as Martin's hit last year? It didn't look nearly in that category to me, but again, I have only seen it once from 100 yards away or more.

The problem with Martin's hit last year is that there is no really good camera angle to see if it was illegal or not (though, I believe it was). With this hit, you can clearly see that the player meant to lead with his head and hit Kyler in the head.

That's BS that he got suspended. 15 yards was more than enough....I'd be pissed if I were a Fresno St fan, but then again, I'd be so pissed about the welfare fraud scandal that I might put this issue on the back burner. <_<

Suspension was over the line. I don't know if you could determine intent––didn't look to me like he was trying to go helmet to helmet. Football is a fast game. The flag was deserved and it was enough.

i guess i am in the minority, but i thought it was a nasty enough hit to deserve a stiffer penalty. maybe i'm biased, but he definitely lead with his head. i think that is a difference between this and the martin hits. martin's helmet may have hit the other players' helmet, but his head was up. with the reed hit, his head was down.

i was worried for reed, but i could be over-reacting.

Suspension is iffy, but the kid left the ground and led with the top of his head. Didn't even lift his arms to try to tackle.

In that case, I'd say a suspension's not too far off-base.

I think that in most cases where it's simply something that happens at game speed and the player was just trying to make a hit and wasn't really thinking about how to make the hit and there was incidental helmet-to-helmet contact (which I think was the case with Martin, although upon watching the replay from several angles I'd say there should've been a penalty called on him), a suspension is unnecessary. It doesn't sound like the contact between Reed and the Fresno State player wasn't entirely "incidental" on the part of the FS player, though.
