Fresno State player suspended for hit on Kyler Reed

Suspension is iffy, but the kid left the ground and led with the top of his head. Didn't even lift his arms to try to tackle.
This, and it was on a defenseless receiver with the ball being way overthrown.

I said at the time it happened he should have been ejected. It was clearly vicious with no attempt on the ball.

Right, but was it as bad as Martin's hit last year? It didn't look nearly in that category to me, but again, I have only seen it once from 100 yards away or more.
It certainly wasn't as malicious. I think the suspensions are unwarranted in both cases. I think the bigger deal on the Fresno hit was that the play was pretty much over so there was no need for a hit of any kind.

That pass was thrown right at where I was sitting in the south end zone, so I had no idea where it was in relation to the hit. I'm going to watch that game tonight if it kills me.

I'm not surprised, he led with his helmet, and was pretty much the textbook definition of the type of hit they're trying to discourage. If nothing else, it raises awareness.

You could see that he actually moved his head towards Reed's. He didn't try to avoid it at all. IMO it definitely warrants the suspension.

We need a poll on this one!!

My vote would be penalty, ejection, and no game suspension.

I guess since he wasn't ejected they want to send a message that they don't want them targeting with helmet to helmet collisions.

I think an ejection without a suspension would've been a good call in that case. I didn't think of that.

Suspensions seem like the type of thing that should be saved for unquestionably malicious intent (throwing punches, or doing anything with the obvious intent of trying to injure someone). This sounds like it was right on the line.

they could have just forced him to miss a quarter of the next game, even. i do thing suspensions should be saved for when it's clear that the intent is unsportsmanlike conduct, not when it is questionable if the player was overzealous. still, he clearly lead with the top of his helmet, looked like spearing. that should be a no-no.

The difference between the FSU hit and Martin's hit is that the OSU player was not paying attention (he should've been expecting to be hit, it was a kick return for god's sake), but Reed was defenseless. That's a pretty big difference in my opinion.

Martin's hit maybe deserved a 15 yard penalty and nothing more (it is football after all).

The FSU hit warranted immediate ejection, but I disagree with a suspension after the fact.

I disagree with this suspension. I think suspensions should be for doing things like punching players but unless the player admits to going for his head I think things like this should be nothing more then a penalty.

I actually am agreeing with this decision. And this is coming from a former college defensive ball player.

The ball was overthrown by almost 5 yards over Kyler's head. Reed had given up on the play and never even made an attempt to even make it look like he was trying to go for the catch. He was as the rule states as defenseless as they come.

And for all those that were screaming for the ISU LB that was wrenching on Rex's head in a pile up to be suspended, this hut had the potential for far more damage being done to the athlete. With all the stuff coming out about concussions and what not, and scarier a Chadron State rb actually had to have emergency brain surgery after a glancing blow to the head caused vessels to pop, this hit had the potential to severely trump a sore and twisted neck.

That's a really good point.
