Fumbles...

Everyone seems to be jumping on the bad tackling bandwagon. NU seems to go for the big hit and trying to strip the ball instead of basic tackling below the waist. So, I won't bother with another thread on that.

But, I have another concern and it's difficult to articulate without sounding negative.

The two fumbles against CU. Now, those runners were trying the level best to get extra yards and I can only applaud that kind of effort. But, whatever happend to the old adage of two hands at contact. When a runner is about to make contact isn't he supposed to protect the ball with two hands, one on each end of the ball. Am I missing something here that on both of those fumbles the runner had the ball in one hand only. It's those two lost fumbles that turn this game into a route IMHO. Or should I just be happy with the strong win.

Wilson's fumble was bad. He definitely should have had two hands on that ball. When you get into traffic like that and start getting stood up, that's when the other team will have the best chance of stripping it out. You HAVE to wrap both arms around it then. I promise you he got a talkin' to about that one.

I'm trying to remember the other one, but I think it was Jackson with the ball in his left arm, right? If I remember correctly, he had the ball too far out away from his body, so his arm/the ball got clipped by a shoulder pad or helmet on the tackle. He needed to have it more into his body there at the very least.

I've seen an improvement with the two hands on the ball, though. It appears to be something they're working on, but it's a slow process because it has to become instinct and that doesn't happen overnight.

Last night on the Coach Callahan Show, Coach said that Wilson has a problem with protecting the ball and its something he needs to work on.

I remember seeing a short clip about Micheal Hart from Michigan and what he does to protect the ball (he has only one fumble or no fumbles during his college career). He said that he always carries the ball in his right arm because that is the arm that he feels most comfortable with. He also said that he tucks the ball back under the front of his chest pads so that the nose is hidden and the ball is pressed tightly against the body with his right arm.

As far as what our backs need to do to secure the ball, I really have no answers, but they just need to get a comfortable feel for the ball and hopefully that will work for them.

the always in the right arm thing is something you hear most coaches not wanting the backs to do. Usually they want the ball in the arm by the sideline. A bit safer, and it alows for a stiff arm.

Well if a player is not comfortable with carrying the football in his left arm (sideline arm), then that could be a dissaster too.

That's probably why he doesn't see much playing time. GET IT THROUGH YOUR SKULL WILSON!!!

If no body can figure out how to hang on to the ball by this point in the season, then it's probably something they're just gunna have to work on in the spring for next year. (same thing goes for tackling as well) We're just gunna have to fight through it.

Hey now, Wilson is just frustrated that he just stopped getting carries, and it is understandable. I personally think him and Lucky are the best backs of the foursome. Lucky is the speedier sideline back and Wilson is more of a power runner. Kinda like the Reggie Bush and Lendale White

I think that BJax is the best of the four on the field right now, Wilson and Lucky might be faster, but they are just not performing the way Jax is. Glenn has been hurt, but will be a force to deal with next year.

I agree and when Wilson is having problems holding on to the ball you have to go with someone who is more sure handed and isn't going to turn the ball over. Lucky is our more play-action pass guy because he is such a great receiving back........
