When BC came to Lincoln, I must admit that I thought that NU was a "pit-stop" back to the NFL........ Now, I am not so sure.... as I have stated before, after the CU win at Boulder 2 years ago, BC got "choked up" and had trouble speaking after that win..... he talked about how proud he was of "his kids"........ this is not a behavior or statement made by a coach in the NFL....... I think he really does enjoy the college level, and it just took a year or two for him to rekindle his fondness for the college game...... He is no longer the "CEO" type of coach, but more of a typical college coach...

By the way..... remember, he has spent 17 years of his coaching career in the college game.....

It's apparent that you have never seen film on d!(k Vermiel! The guy cried in every press conference and always referred to his players as "kids" and "boys". The guy would go around and hug almost every one of his players before the game.

I hated this thread initially (but newbies will get the feel eventually), but leave it to the Husker pundits to take it where it needs to go :clap . I really feel like this is Cally's year to shine as a college coach. This is a schedule where he will have to have a gameplan, be willing to change as necessary, and throw in 'trickeries' to get it all done. Lest it be said, NU is going to be 'out-talented' on at least 2 occasions, one on the road. To have a chance...

2) Heart

3) Nebraska

Personally I am glad NIRVANA joined this board because he has taken a lot of heat of me! NIRVANA, when I joined this board I thought Foppa was a moron also. But I have learned he is passionate, thoughtful, and a take no sh** kind of guy. I now him consider as one of my buddies even though we have our differences.

As far as football is concerned, off the top of my head I can't think of any coach who coached in the NFL, came back to college, and then returned to the NFL. I'm sure there must be one. The college ranks are full of the corpses of very good college coaches who couldn't make it in the NFL but shined in college.

My thoughts exactly. I have not seen a single press clipping from anywhere (and I try to follow them as much as possible) about Callahan even mentioning a whim that he might one day return to the pros. Again, I don't doubt the possibility, but you can build your legend in a state that doesn't forget, or go to the ESPN mill where the wind blows worse than in DC. If it were me, with what they're paying me, I'd take the Huskers any day and twice on Sunday. Especially with kids. Who wants to end up in Chicago, New York, or the West Coast with kids?

Funny how the man himself has said directly and succinctly that he has no interest in returning to the NFL. I've heard it here, folks. He says he loves where he's at, the job he's doing, the people he works with. Once Bill's got that Big XII championshi trophy sitting in his case and the potential for a national championship in the works, everyone is going to fall silent, then slowly trickle into thunderous applause. Once that happens, he'll have his option, stay, or pros. I don't think he's going anywhere––because that's how he says he feels.

How many coaches have supposedly been happy with where they're at only to get that hot phone call and be on the next plane out of town? I'm sure the Miami Dolphins are real happy with Saban. Plus, I don't see NU trying to compete money wise with a pro team if BC ever has that kind of success. Considering the loyalty of BC's assistants to the program, what makes you think BC will be anymore loyal if the right situation opens up for him? I'm pretty sure I read where Miles was very happy at OSU, but after the call from LSU wow he got happier. Petrino was supposedly happy at Louisville a couple of years ago when he turned down pro jobs. What happened? Well he found what he perceived as the right opening and bolted to Atlanta. I think it's very naive to at least not accept the fact that BC may get lured away from NU by a pro team. However, I think he's got a lot to do and accomplish before many/any pro teams lay out the red carpet for him.

I think the difference is is that Callhan has ALREADY done the NFL thing. Saban never had. Say what you want to about Callahan's abilities as a head coach, but anyone who is at the helm at Oakland is already hog-tied by Davis from the get-go.

Say what you want about the assistants, but they are leaving due to stepping up their careers, not stepping down. (i.e. Frank Solich...and yeah, didn't leave as an assistant, or on his own terms, who cares.) It sucks for Nebraska, but is still a positive sign that our assistants are competent and doing well.

I'm not quite sure why you even mentioned Frank Solich as leaving considering he was the HEAD coach not just an assistant and he was FIRED. I'm speaking of guys like the Offensive Coordinator who made a lateral move to UCLA as the OC. I'm sure you're going to bring things up like he didn't get to call the plays, etc. Fact is, he was the OC at NU and is now the OC at UCLA. A lateral move on paper. Also, you have to question why he'd leave NU to go coach under a head coach that is on the hot seat and was listed as a Mandel top 5 worst coach? Typically when a head coach is fired, his assistants are without a job as well. If UCLA struggles, Norvell might be begging for a job. Blake pretty much made a lateral move as well. He may have seen somewhat of an upgrade, but it's at a much lesser school. I'm not sure if I'd call his leaving a step up in career. Snyder at KState lost a lot of assistants as does Bob Stoops, the only difference is their assistants leave for HEAD coaching positions not lateral movements.

I didn't notice anything in your original post about anyone ASKING you to start a campaign, or to speculate on potential staff changes––you seemed to desire us to listen to you. You honestly don't think that he has more control over the offense at UCLA then he did at NU? If you do you kidding yourself. What may appear to be a lateral move on paper my not end up being one for Norvell's career. Also if you think he will be begging for a job from somebody if Darrell gets the boot you are once again kidding yourself. He has had no problem landing jobs at either the NFL or NCAA level. He left OU to come to NU and I'm sure there are plenty of staffs that would be more then happy to take him. I may be wrong but I also believe Norvell's wife's health played a part is this move.

Go to this website look at John Blake's titles and tell me again that he didn't make a step up career wise. I don't know much but I'm pretty sure the first 2 titles probaly doubled his salary from what it was at NU. If you ask me the job he has now is a pretty flipping good job. It's not like he ended up at some mid-level D1 school. He is the Associate Head Coach/Recruiting Cord./DL Coach at a school in a BSC conference in the middle of a recruiting hot bed. I think he did alright for himself.

First let me say I think there are a fair number of fans with me to say I never wanted Pelini for our Head Coaching position. We tried "the promote from within" with Frank and it hurt our level of talent.

I don't doubt that Rathman, if given the opportunity, would be an excellent coach. I just doubt that Callahan is really going to leave any time in the near future unless he is escorted out after a couple more mediocre seasons. But of course, like I said before, only time will tell. A lot can change in the span of a year or two. Look at Urban Meyer, it was this side of two years ago that Urban was here in Utah to stay...that is until he ran the table and won a BCS game. Granted he stayed in College, but how soon before he tries his likes at the NFL. Still, it is just a feeling, but I think Callahan is here to stay for a long while.

I was at the UCLA-SMU basketball game after UCLA upset Ohio St. in the Rose Bowl when Vermiel was introduced at half time and he cried at his own introduction!

You are making a lot of assumptions in that post, but the main assumption still goes unaddressed.

Again, you are assuming

A) he wants to coach.

B) He'd be good at coaching at a high profile Div I school.

C) He'd want to coach at NU.

Just because someone was a good player in a sport doesn't mean he or she will be able to coach it. Not only be able to coach, but be a head coach at a high profile university right out of the gate. All the coaches you mentioned didn't start out as head coaches at some huge college without some king of coaching at that level or higher. Hell Pelini hasn't and, if you ask me, won't be a head coach.

That's all I am saying. I will never understand how some people automatically know that person A will be a good coach with no more evidence than "he was a good player".

There will not be another Osborne. There won't be another Devaney. Period.
