Games will be lower scoring this year

Walk-on
With the opening weekend of college football just days away, many players are studying changes made during the off-season. One of the biggest changes doesn’t involve any player or team, but the length of the game itself.

Rule 3-2-5-e states “When Team A is awarded a first down, the clock will be stopped and will start on the ready for play signal.” This amendment means the clock will restart when the ball is ready after a punt or kickoff; the clock didn’t start in prior years until the ball was snapped.

In a typical game, each team has about 12 possessions. The new rule should come into play approximately 24 times and is estimated to shorten the game by five minutes. One obvious consequence of this new rule is that games will be lower scoring. If each team now only has 11 possessions instead of 12 (12 * 55 minutes / 60 minutes), you would expect scoring to be about 8% lower…..

Where it'll really affect a team is towards the end of the game and there's only a few seconds left on the clock. South Carolina ran into that problem. The refs started the clock before the offense was even on the field and they lost several seconds off the clock trying to get lined up. Coaches and players alike are really going to have to watch their clock management especially if they're trying to score before the end of the half/game.

Precisely. Which also means that the smart coaches are going to hoard timeouts like gold.

If you don't like the new rule there is a petition to get rid of it you can sign here. I signed it, I think that the new rule just gives the TV companies more time to play commercials, the games are still scheduled for 3 hours in TV time, so how do you think they fill in the rest of the time?

I hate the new rules for that and other reasons. I didn't think there was a problem with the way things were. Why change it? Games are running too long? I don't buy it. I do buy into the reason that it's all about money, though. The changes reflect that attitude of "let's just hurry up (the clock) and end the game". I also hate that the total number of plays that are run by each team will be significantly reduced by the changes.

I signed the petition.

someone should start a thread that brings MORE attention to this petition. I would...but I'm not good with links and all. BTW, Nebraska fans have the fourth highest number of respondents to the petition. Florida is #1.
