The wait is finally over for senior Nebraska quarterback Sam Keller.

NU head coach Bill Callahan officially named Keller the Huskers starting quarterback on Monday, so that means all of his focus can now shift over to Nebraska's season opener against Nevada on Sept. 1.

Originally, Callahan wasn't going to name a starter until game week, but because of how far ahead NU is right now, Callahan said the staff felt they had a strong enough evaluation on both Keller and junior Joe Ganz to move forward with an official announcement on Monday.

"I just think his consistency throughout the competition," Callahan said as to why Keller won the starting job. "It was a very close competition. Both (Ganz and Keller) are great kids and it's a good problem to have. All those kids are great competitors and they're all capable of starting in Division I programs. I'm proud of all of them and they've handled it in a class manner. They're great kids in that aspect.

"They all want to be the starter and Joe was disappointed and he should be disappointed. I would be disappointed as well, so that's a good sign. In talking with Joe, we visited with all the quarterbacks today to let them know where they stand. I felt it was important to personally visit with each and every one of them to let them know where each one of them was at."

i think Joey will hang in there, hard for any qb to make it through a whole season any more...

I'm not saying he won't start next year, because it's certainly possible. However, I would not be surprised in the least if he isn't starting next year. The guys behind him are simply more talented and enable the offense to do things they can't with him.

Kudos to Joe. He is taking this disappointment like a man not a spoiled little diva like some have in the past. He seems much more mature than belies his years. Hell, he's more mature than I'll ever be. :) He has team spirit and wants to do what is best for the team.

GBR

Yup. And I rest easier knowing Joe is there to take the reigns if need be. He's the best #2 we've had in several years.

Nice. This guy has my respect oozing out of me. Do I think he is the best this year? Probably not. Do I think he will be next year? Probably not...

But here's the thing...

If Ganz gets his shot, guess who we're all going to rally behind? Guess who we're going to pin our hopes on? A guy with the initials B.B. had to endure this all the way through the Bowl game, and who was projected to go pro? NU's starter? No. In one instance, Joe Ganz can change Nebraska's religion, so to speak. It might not be likely, but it can happen. And if he gets a chance...he will try. And if he gets his shot, I hope he does. :woo

I agree. How many other teams in the Big XII can say that? What happens to Mizzou if Daniel gets hurt? Or KSU if Freeman gets hurt? Okie St. if Reid goes down? Obviously someone will probably find a couple teams that can say that, but, I really feel good knowing he's our #2.
