Police say a would-be thief in Hawke's Bay was lucky not to blow himself up.
Hastings police were called to a farm around 2am, after a man was seen trying to steal petrol from a vehicle.
He was using a cigarette lighter to see what he was doing, but held the flame too close to the petrol fumes and the car caught alight.
A 19-year-old has been charged with theft.
