GATA

International Man of Mystery
The incoming players who've yet to experience a Miles workout better get used to hearing at least one well-used Miles term: GATA.

It stands for Get After Their … well, behind.

More than a term, it's a mind-set.

"Every drill, that's what he's preaching, going hard 100 percent of the time, not taking a play off and not letting the other team score, or just because you're tired, not letting something bad happen," Ubel said. "He even has a couple of drills that are called GATA."

Smiles is making them work. Good. If nothing else, a faster tempo should be more fun to watch, and it should be easier to recruit guys to play in a system like that.

One of my favorite things about Smiles. He may be all fun and games off the court, but if you aren't working in practice you aren't playing.

Also fortuitous timing that the ncaa now allows some off-season work with players to a greater degree than before.

Especially helpful for a coach/team/program in transition......
