Gesture-Gate

DALLAS – In accordance with the Big 12 Conference Principles and Standards of Sportsmanship, the Conference has publicly reprimanded University of Nebraska head football coach Bill Callahan for his on-field behavior during Saturday’s game against Oklahoma.

Callahan’s action occurred at the 10:58 mark of the fourth quarter after an Oklahoma 17-yard touchdown run by Kejuan Jones. Callahan acknowledged that he did make a gesture out of frustration and intended no malice toward an official.

“I understand Coach Callahan’s explanation of his gesture, however it resembled an action specifically prohibited by the NCAA football rule book [Rule 9-2-a-1-(a)],” stated Commissioner Kevin Weiberg. “This was out of character for Coach Callahan. He has been very good to work with and his sideline demeanor had been exemplary. I have great respect for him and understand that he was acting on emotion. However, the Big 12 and its member institutions place tremendous emphasis on the Conference’s Sportsmanship Policy, and I believe his action in this situation constituted unsportsmanlike conduct and therefore warrants a public reprimand.”

“The University of Nebraska is a proud member of the Big 12 Conference and has great respect for the Commissioner and his staff,” said Nebraska athletics director Steve Pederson. “We appreciate the fact that they have accepted Coach Callahan’s explanation of this gesture. We also recognize that any kind of gesture is not in character either with Coach Callahan or our program. We accept the public reprimand and are ready to put this matter behind us.”

I personally pray that this puts an end to this. There is a little thing Saturday called football. Maybe we can start concentrating on that.

Whether he did it or not, the damage has already been done. Callahan continues to dig a deeper hole, one that is deep enough because of loses. These types of actions are simply making his job tougher. Call it emotion, gesture, whether it was warranted or not, gives NU a poor or poorer image across the nation. National support and recruits are needed for Nebraska to be successful. As clean and image as possible, but this makes it that much harder.

One of the reasons I am against what Callahan has done is because I have heard him speak numerous times and he holds himself and his staff to high standards when it comes to public image. But in the last two years, he has had two very embarrassing moments, ironically both against OU, our esteemed, respected, well-battled rival, in which NU (we) come out looking poorly.

I think Coach Callahan needs to watch the video, which I'm sure contrary to his public comments, he has watched numerous times and if I have gauged him correctly in my encounters with him, he feels quite bad about it and regrets what he has done and will do anything to apologize for it. So I'd like to hope.

Coach Callahan continue to work as hard as possible and help bring NU back. I believe in your abilities and personality, but these incidents must stop.

Bill was forefront about his action. I kind of like a coach with some character. It is football!! I think it was an heat of the moment thing, he steped foreward it is taken care of and thats the END. Enough said.
