Ex-Husker coach, QB Gill pursues Buffalo coaching job

Turner Gill is continuing to pursue a head coaching job.

The former Nebraska quarterback and assistant coach has interviewed for the vacancy at the University of Buffalo, according to the Buffalo (N.Y.) News. After five losing seasons, Bulls head coach Jim Hofher was fired with two games left this year. The Bulls ended up 1-10, including 1-7 in Mid-American Conference play.

Hofher, who had one year remaining on his contract, posted an 8-49 overall mark at Buffalo. He took over a fledgling program that made the jump to NCAA Division I-A when it joined the MAC in 1999.

The 43-year-old Gill is in his first season as director of player development and offensive assistant with the NFL Green Bay Packers. He had spent the previous 13 seasons as a Nebraska assistant coach.

Gill couldn’t be reached for comment Tuesday. If he lands the Buffalo job, he would join the same conference as former Nebraska head coach Frank Solich, who just completed his first season at Ohio.

In announcing his resignation from Nebraska last February, Gill said he wanted to pursue head coaching opportunities. He is known to have interviewed for head coaching positions at New Mexico State and Sam Houston State, with those jobs going to Hal Mumme and Todd Whitten, respectively.

He took the Packers’ position after it became clear he wouldn’t land a head coaching position.

Gill coached receivers at Nebraska in 2004 after 12 seasons of guiding quarterbacks. He was 28-2 as the Huskers’ starting quarterback from 1981-83.

I know that Gill really wants to be a head coach, and I think that over time he could become a very good one. But wouldn't it be better if he was on Offensive coordinator or defensive coordinator first?

If he can get htis job and turn it around a little biut he should be able to move up. 2 wins at Buffalo would be a turn around. I find it odd that some of the Husker Nation wanted to hand the keys over to Turner yet he can only get interviews at lower tier schools. I guess if you start out at Buffalo there is no place to go but up.

Turner Gill has a pretty decent rersume. No reason to think he shouldn't be considered for the job. On the other hand, how ironic would it be if Gill did get hired, played Ohio next year and beat Solich?

Maybe we can schedule Buffalo for sometime in 2008 or 2009 and that should give Gill plenty of time to get some decent talent and an offensive gameplan installed.

Someone mentioned being a defensive coordinator first. Gill would never be hired as a DC. He has no experience as a DC let alone any defensive experience as an assistant.

He's paid his dues and is ready to be a head man and deserves it. I'm sure he figures that if he can get a job and do pretty good for 3 years that by then callahan will be fired and he will be the obvious choice for the job.

So now if Gill is successful at Buffalo, that means he's ready to take over for a program like NU? :rollin

Maybe when Gill gets the NU head coaching job after Callahan is fired, UNO's head coach can take over for the Buffalo program
