The man was a diver diving on a shipwreck expecting to find jewels in a safe. Upon opening the safe, all he found was a hand severed by the original thief who had it removed when the ship went down and the in-rushing water slammed the safe door closed. NO, not the answer but you are very, very close.The diver looked into a giant clam to find a huge pearl but found the severed hand of a diver who had attempted the same thing before him.
