Publication tabs NU's Gordon nation's best

LINCOLN - Add another honor to the résumé of Nebraska junior Alex Gordon.
The All-America third baseman has been selected as the preseason national player of the year by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.
Gordon heads a three-team list of players that includes 14 participants in the 2004 College World Series and eight representatives of the Big 12 Conference. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound Lincoln Southeast graduate hit .365 last season with 18 home runs and 75 RBIs, earning consensus All-America honors and the Big 12 player of the year award.
Last summer, Gordon played for a Team USA squad that finished unbeaten and won the gold medal at the World University Games in Taiwan. Gordon hit a tournament-high .524 at the event with two home runs.
Baseball America ranks the left-handed hitting Gordon as the No. 1 college prospect for baseball's amateur draft in June. He is expected to become the first NU player to go in the opening round since 1995.
The Huskers, ranked No. 31 nationally in the preseason by Collegiate Baseball, open Feb. 17 at Hawaii-Hilo.
