Coach Gundy at Oklahoma State had a great speech (actually a rant against people downgrading the kids on his team). It was wonderful to see him stand up for what is right. The below url will get you to the video of his tirade:

He is so right. I am a college professor and have worked with college kids for nearly 30 years. They are kids. They should not be treated roughly or rudely by us or anyone else. No one should kick these kids who are hurting while they are down. Lets not rip into players. Some argue that the 18-22 year old football players are not "kids" but adults and should be able to take the heat. No. They are kids emerging, maybe, as adults upon exit. They are not professionals. They are not entertainers who are to perform to our expectations. They, like Gundy says, are amateurs who go to class try to contribute and try their best. If they do not meet your standards, well.... do not belittle them.
As Gundy says, the coaches are different. But the players are kids just trying to do their best in difficult times. As he says rip the coaches if there is a problem --- they are accountable , adults and are paid to take the heat. But leave the kids alone. As Gundy says, imagine what it would be like to have your son written about in the media and on the web and referred to as "slow, can't tackle, sucks, is afraid of contact, etc." and all your kid ever did wrong was try his best, study his butt off, work out like mad, dream of being a Husker, dons the Red uniform and gives his best only to be ridiculed by a bunch of fat, out of shape, wanna-be fanatics hiding behind internet monikers.
Listen to the Gundy rant. It is great. He has my respect.
If there is somebody out there more technologically adroit than I would you please somehow attach the Gundy video to this thread? thanks.
