Continue trying to convince me that Tommy Armstrong intentionally throws footballs to players out of bounds as if he's some sort of moron.

I'll continue to tell you that Tommy makes mistakes like every other QB on the planet, you don't know what his thought process was on that play, and I'll be rooting for the kid if he remains the starter.

You'll latch onto somebody else since the guy you thought was going to overtake the job was 5th on the depth chart and transferred.

You asked me a question to which you already know what I'll answer.

I don't answer saying it won't change your thinking.

Even after reading my response - to which you have no proof to the contrary - you still don't change your thinking.

The conversation was a waste of time from the beginning i just wanted to hear you say it so you could see how stupid it sounded when it came out of your mouth.

Even if he did make a mistake and try to throw to Westy out of bound, who gives a sh#t?

I knew you couldn't possibly know what Tommy was thinking on that particular play because I know you're not Tommy Armstrong. Unless of course, you are Tommy Armstrong and then I'd have to questions for you Tommy.

1. Whydo you run around this site under codename Mavric ttalking sh#t about yourself?

2. Don't you have better things you could be doing?

Man Tommy needs to light it up this year so i can see the butthurt flow from you worse than it already does.

 
OK. Found the play. Against Rutgers in the second quarter. A couple differences from how I recalled it. There was some pressure so I was wrong on that. TA did a nice job stepping up and delivering the ball - which he had room to do. He wasn't really hurried but there was a defender closing in. The pass was to Bell, not Westerkamp which doesn't make any difference. The other difference is I thought the pass actually landed well OOB. Actually, it was intercepted which proves that he wasn't throwing it away, it was just a terrible pass.

Here's the throw. As I said, he did have a little pressure but if you watch the video, he wasn't rushed or just unloading the ball. It also shows another point that has been discussed. If someone is going to say it was because of the pressure, he had a wide open AA underneath for a very easy check down. But he never even looks at AA. As you'll see in the second pic, considering the coverage, the check down to AA was easily the best option here.

Here's the other end of the play. I've added a red arrow to point out where Bell is because it's a wide shot and it's tough to pick him out since he's well on the other side of the sideline strip among a bunch of Rutgers players. I'll give TA two options on this. Either he had decided pre-snap that he was throwing to Bell or he just didn't even look where he was throwing. Considering seeing the field is not a strong suit either - and especially on a throw to his left - either is possible.

I *kind of* remember that play. As I recall it was emblematic of how we approached our passing game: QB and WR both read the coverages and plays are supposed to be designed such that there's always an option that gets the WR open in one area.

Of course, this proved rather problematic when QB and WR didn't feel the same way about the coverage, or when the WR didn't end up where he was supposed to be (like three yards out of bounds?). Probably a great example of why you don't design a passing game this way. Why not limit the reads to one side of the field, etc, bring the guy on slowly where later in his career he might be able to do more?

I think Beck thought this scheme was terribly clever. And it did have its bonuses, I suppose. It was also pretty risky and if you play that way, you're going to have to accept mistakes that, when they happen, can be huge and glaring.

I'm skeptical whether Tommy can evolve into the kind of passer Riley & co. will need him to be, but in any case, I sure am glad we're not going to do Beck's idea of a passing game any longer.

 
I don't see why we even needed pictures for this. I remember clearly seeing Ameer way more wide open than that multiple times and it drove me mad throughout the season.

I don't necessarily disagree in general but I don't think it applies to this play. It's not like they were on different pages on this play. TA threw it right to where Bell would have been had he not gotten pushed out of bounds.

Beck specifically said the QB decides which half of the field to "play" and only uses that side for that play.

 
Beck's passing offense is unstoppable

IF you have nearly unlimited practice time - like in the NFL or with Rich Rod.

 
I really wish Tommy would tuck the ball and run more often instead of trying to force the ball down field.

New day, new coaches, new system. I hope he figures a few more things out. Between the fact that he was playing in Tim Becks offense and the fact that he was a sophomore playingbehind a struggling offensive line, I expected some struggles and can't excuse all of them. Nor have I tried to.

I still think the guy does a lot of things really well, just gotta get better.

I can't wait for kickoff.

Reminds me of the old days before every game was on TV and before the coaches show. LJS would have series of clips like this for a couple of great plays. It was the only visual you had of a play. If you think the Sunday paper Husker section is big now . . . . .
