Handshakes

Remind me to not play a pick up game with you any of you bastards! Congradulating your opponent is all about respect and showing a little class, win OR lose. My question is why is that so damn hard for people to understand that now days? It that the way you guys plan to teach your kids how to act if they play sports? Then we wonder why all these kids coming up think it's about me, me, me! And that's all I heard in James's "explanation" was Lebron, Lebron, Lebron.

In regards to Bo's comments, I can see a few reasons for them. The first is he's a football guy, which is one of the only sports where you don't shake all 50 players hands. But you still meet in the middle of the field, and the coaches always shake each others hands. Two, he is from Ohio, he's probably a Cav's/ Lebron fan. So it doesn't surprise me that he would down play this when the media is on LJ's case. Just think back at the way Husker fans tried to explain away the Kellen Houston sucker punch in 2003 to show you how far fans will go when it's "their" guy.

Bottom line, I felt he showed no class, and was more than a little disrespectful to his fellow competitors. And I don't need to watch 45 min worth of Sportscenter's analysis on the matter to tell me that.

WHO CARES!!! What does shaking hands have to do with being a good sport? I think rugby does it best. I'd rather drink a beer with my opponent, rather then shake hands anyday!! At least if I lose and drink enough, I can forget it even happened, and that's the way I like it!! Here's to winning!!

 
I have always thought the forced handshakes after games was nothing more than contrived absurdity. It just comes off to me as a line of BS so someone can use one of those 'for the kids' lines.

I am ok with LeBron not shaking hands. It really isn't that big of a deal. Yeah he should have shaken hands with the Magic players but that shouldn't have been one of the main headlines of the game. I agree with Bo.

Unfortunately it is about respect. It seems most people these days have litte of it to give.

But I am old, and it has been drilled into me since I was knee high to a grasshopper, you love that don't ya.

Then compounding it by being a jarhead, you have someone that is far over the limit.

I think if you are forcing people to shake hands it loses its appeal. Just like when you force a kid to apologize for something....they don't mean it when they say it.

My wrestling coach in high school did not like it when a wrestler would be sent over to shake his hand after a match...shake the person's hand who you just beat or got beat by, but why shake the hand of someone who had nothing to do with what just happened.

I think it is a choice if a person feels they needed to. I absolutely hated walking through the line and holding my hand out...not too many people said anything, especially if you were the team that got beat.

I think a lot of you are missing the point here and thats the way kids think nowadays. They way kids talk these days, or talking smack over the internet, or always trying to start fights just blows my mind. I'm not perfect and nobody is, I'm a real competative guy when I play sports and yes when I get my a$$ kicked in Co-ed softball I don't really want to shake the opposing teams hand but I do it because its good sportsmanship and its really respectful. Shaking hands at the end of the game whether you like it or not shows great sportsmanship and other kids see this and they learn from it. Lebron was a big baby storming off the court not congradulating the opposing team after a lose and kids see that and they think its ok to do it too. Lebron saying his dumba$$ comment about I'm a winner and blah blah blah is a sign that his reputation as the KING and GOD in basketball has gone straight to his head and nobody matters but him.

I referee football for high school and junior high whether its 7th, 8th, 9th, JV, or Varsity, but before every game and before the coin toss we bring both the teams captains in and we give our speech about how the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) encourages sportsmanship. If the opposing team has a nice run tap him on his helmet and let him know, or if the opposing team makes a good tackle let him know, or if theres a dog pile help the opposing team up to their feet. We remind the kids that cursing won't be tolerated and that its just a game and we're here to have fun.

The problem with kids these days is that everything has to be cool and hip and if it's not its f**king gay or its stupid with no point. Thats the way kids in society grow up and see and think thats they way it is and its alright which is the wrong thing in imbrace. Not everything has to be cool to be the right thing.

Most of you are saying that shaking hands is pointless and is stupid so you're going to raise your kids and teach them that shaking hands during a flag football game is pointless and stupid? I don't get some of our husker fans lately because I respect and take pride in our "Greatest Fans in College Football" and I remind people of that quote and I live by that quote. I'm gonna raise my kids to respect and to take pride into that quote and teach them about sportsmanship during sporting events whether its flag football or Varsity football.

I actually Tweeted Bo back about this. Abso-freaking-lutely agree. You expect people to dedicate their entire lives to something and NOT be frustrated when their hopes are dashed? If you show good sportsmanship throughout a game/series, there's no reason you need to do the contrived handshake at the end of a game when your heart is broken.

So by your logic myself and the others on this board who think it is pointless/forced to shake hands with someone after a game we less of a fan than you? I think it is not right that the kids are forced to walk through an assembly line to shake hands. As I said, some don't mean it when they walk through or they just walk through and not even say anything/shake hands. I have seen and been a part of it at the high school level and college level.

Kids I don't think are forced to walk through an assembly line to shake hands......they are encourage to do so because its good sportsmanship. I don't think that you or any other board members are less of a fan than me just because you/they think it's pointless/forced to shake hands no I don't think that and I hope that you're not implying that I'm thinking that way. My logic around the "Greatest Fans in College Football" is we as Husker fans applause the opposing team for beating us on our home field because we show great sportsmanship and respect toward the other team. Some fans might find that pointless/forced to do such an act but we do it because like I said of great sportsmanship and respect. Some of us Husker fans even high five or congrat the other team when they make an amazing play. I remember the bowl game watching it with my cousin and at halftime I said to him that I wouldn't mind getting beat by Clemson because I respect their team and I felt like Clemson was in the same boat as we were the year before with Callahan.

I think your logic about the shaking hands part about being pointless and being force to as something of not being cool and something that is wrong to do but I could be wrong....but do two wrongs equal a right? I was brought up and raised while playing sports to have good sportsmanship whether you like it or not because its just a game and you're there to have fun. I'm not going to lie but I'm one of the MOST COMPETATIVE guy you'll ever meet and I hate losing but after every game that I've gotten my butt kicked and no matter how pissed off I am I still shake the opposing teams hands because its another way of showing good sportsmanship.

I think you also missed the point where I talked about refereeing football in the fall and that IHSAA encourage us as referees to talk about sportsmanship to all of kids about good sportsmanship because its just a game and we're there to have fun. The crew that I work with is one of thee top notch grews in the Siouxland area and we are unusual from all of the other crews because we talk to the athletes on the field and we actually congrate a player if they make a nice catch, tackle, or helping the opposing player to their feet after a play.

I respect your opinion and I see what you're trying to say I really do because there are things that I think are pointless and stupid but I do them anyways because its either my job or its the right thing to do, I just wanted to give some other helpful info on my thoughts of why I think shaking hands is a good way of encouraging athletes on using good sportsmanship. Another thing what I liked about shaking hands after the game is you got to get face to face with another athlete who maybe had one hell of a game, catch, tackle, etc and let him know that he did some amazing stuff on the football field while shaking his hand.

Totally agree. I don't have a problem with what LeBron did. This isn't little league were everyone get's a participation ribbon at the end of the season. It's professional sports with world championships on the line as well as potential endorsement dollars.

 
Wasn't it LeBron James I saw yukking it up with his teammates at center court when they won the first round of playoff games? Gee...I think it was! Seems like he can handle winning pretty good but when it comes to getting his a$$ handed to him by a better team, he turns into a big pouty baby. Oh, but I'm sure it was all the fault of his teammates and those big, bad thugs from Orlando that kept pushing him around and beating him up....Pooooor LeBron....the guy needs to grow a pair.

I've coached youth football, basketball and baseball for years and I've always taught my kids to shake hands with their opponents after the game...win or lose....and I think the players like it. If my team happened to win, it gives the players an opportunity to rub the loser's faces in it..."You guys were the easiest bunch of f**s we've played all year. You suck..." and if they've lost, it gives them an opportunity to air their grievances with opposing players..."Think it was funny when you cheap shotted me in the balls? How funny is it NOW?" followed by a good shove and general hilarity. Plus...I'm the coach and I tell them to shake hands and if they refuse to do it they will be paying for it at the next practice...

Some of our best hits take place after the games while shaking hands...wouldn't do away with it for the world...
