Harvey v Prater

Here is an interesting topic. Do you guys think that Nebraska took Harvey in order to get a shot at A.J. Wallace to help a much depleted secondary, or do you think they saw something in Harvey that they didnt see in Nate Prater? I personally hold the coaches in high regard, but I'm also not stupid. We added Tomerlin, and are going for a few more tight ends this year, which suggests that we dont think that the current tight end group, including Harvey, is enough. I think that they thought both prospects were highly suspect and took Harvey to get a shot at Wallace, who is what they really wanted. Opinions???

 
Hmmm...always an interesting question. I have to think that given the number of scholarships available, combined with injuries, recruits not panning out or becoming eligible, or not living up to their hype, coaches can't afford to "recruit one to get another". Plus, there is no guarantee that the relationship is so strong between two recruits that it ensures the second guy signs. At least, that's the way I'd look at it as a coach.

Harvey was and always will be the intended recruit they were after last year, regardless of what people might think. They just happened to stumble upon A.J. Wallace in the process. Harvey can play TE or DE at the DIV-A level, one reason the coaches recruited him last year.

 
Then why recruit two other Defensive Ends, and then go after a fistful of tight ends the next year. Obviously they dont believe that the current guys can hold down the fort, including Harvey, and for that matter Prater either, but then why not take the local guy, unless they thought he was gonna walk on.

 
Another thing to ponder. We are also going after two teammates from Colton California in Allen Bradford and Shareece Wright. Do you think Wright gets an offer if Bradford isnt his teammate? In this situation I think he does, because he is pretty talented on his own, but the idea of package deals has been around in college football for a long time. I doubt that people completely disregard it because of limits on scholarships. If the coaches think that Wallace, or Bradford, or maybe even Wright himself, are cant miss prospects, than why wouldnt they use one of their 85 scholarships on a marginally talented player who may not help the team that much, but than again, no one they could have gotten would have anyways in the coach's opinions?

Shareece wright and Allen Bradford would have gotton schoalrships from NU regardless if they were teammates or not. They both have talent (from what i saw on film for both of them). You always recruits more guys at a certain position then you need in case someone doesn't pan out.

 
Have to agree with Nameless on his last post. I mean, Wright is a 4-star athlete, and when you can get teammates to talk about the same school, especially 4 and 5 star guys, it can only help.

And no, Harvey didn't get a scholly thanks to AJ Wallace being his teammate. On-lookers raved about Harvey as did the coaches.

Prater was seen as a big-headed malcontent who didn't want to camp at Nebraska but still thought he was worthy of an offer. The coaches just never thought highly of Prater.
