Head Hunting!!!!!

Yeah, Papuchis did a great job coaching. I like the emphasis he provides, and it seems like he is still doing it on the side lines. Papuchis just doesn't have the talent on the D to keep them motivated, which kills the passion. The true talent we have is injured or red shirted. Not saying none are, but our key Dlinemen who were suppose to be rotated are, which doesn't bring in the variety we need.

Hopefully with a sparky kid like Josh Bandares, our defense will have that passion next year.
 Yes, hopefully with an incoming freshman who has yet to play a down of Cornhusker football, let alone even sign his LOI, will get the revamping of heart and passion that this defense needs.
So, what your saying, is its highly doubtful? There are kids who come to just play, and there are kids who dreamed of being a Husker since he was a kid, and won't take failure as an option. Two kids (one here and one commit) are just like this. Armstrong and Bandares. Bandares has helped a ton with our recruiting this year, as Armstrong did last year for us. Natter is a confirmed commit because of Bandares, because of his attitude and his will to be successful. Its already working for our future Huskers, why wouldn't it work for us when they step foot on the field?

Armstrong is a pure leader, and the coaches even stated this, on how he brings people together during practice. Again, heart.
Yes, you can quote me as saying that I highly doubt that a player that has yet to play a down of Nebraska football and has yet to sign his LOI with Nebraska is going to come in his freshman year and be the panacea that this soft, leaderless defense needs. Let me ask you something, I don't mean to be rude by this, but have you ever played football in your life? Because if you have, then you would know that the football team belongs to the seniors and more often than not, that's the foundation of your leadership. That's not to say that there freshmen are completely exempt from being leaders, but more often than not, you will find that it is an EXTREME rarity. In fact, I'd challenge you to find me a true freshman player that has ever been the undisputed leader of a unit, let alone a team.

Basically, to blindly hope that Banderas is just going to come in and start running the joint is pretty damn naive.

Your quite the quotester lol

The biggest point of this thread, is to point out the lack of will and passion I see on the field. On both sides of the ball. Mostly on defense, where its most crucial LB & DL. I thought Fisher would come out with fire, but something is different with that kid, unlike last year. He said that he has "done everything" he has wanted to do academically, but has not done all he wanted to do in his football career. I wonder if he is afraid of a re-break or what, but he is better than he is showing. Compton isn't being utilized like he should, and I think its wearing down on him. He is a blitzing LB, and is almost a guarantee tackle. Our DB's are getting better, and is the least of my worries, unlike the beginning of this year.
Fisher very well could be afraid of re-breaking his leg, however, he has done nothing during his lackluster career at Nebraska to prove to me that it was the leg break that caused him to be a mediocre football player. I tend to believe that he is just a mediocre player. That's not a knock on the kid because I'm sure he works hard in the weight room and brings it in practice, he's just not a very gifted linebacker.

I don't agree that Compton is being mis utililzed. Like it or not, you can't blitz the guy every single play.

Lastly, while that may have been the focal point of your post, leading in with a condescending "let's fire everyone herp-a-derp" is a shot at those who justifiably offering their criticism of the program. While some of it may be a bit over the top, let's not pretend like it's crazy talk and absolutely irrational. When you put a self destructing sh#t storm on the field x many times in prime time television, you're going to reap critique from just about every avenue.

I agree 100%, but there is a thing called "not enough". We gave Miller too much time in the pocket, and we stopped shooting and protecting the gaps. When we did this, he got two VERY nice runs out of us, which could have been prevented, if we left a LB protecting instead of blitzing. I know the QB spy deal isn't in Bo's style, but I think its time to bring that style. Its one of the only way to keep a mobile QB under lock. For example, Notre Dame did it with Michigan and stopped Dennard in his tracks.

What other LB would be suitable to run the Defense? Fisher, Whaley and Compton are gone, which leads no seniors, and we all know, the LB is the leader of the defense. I could see Zaire Anderson becoming that guy next year, but I am not saying Bandares is going to be the "leader" but he can be someone to keep people's spirits high on the side lines, or someone too keep the fans interested and alive. We will have a good linebacker crew next year (Thats if we keep all commits sign LOI's). Newbie, Bandares, Anderson, Rose, Brown, Afalava and Santos, which gives us speed and depth, something we very well lack this year.

Eric Martin is the on only one I see playing with passion on that side of the ball. I could make an expection for Stafford if someone made a passionate enough argument. Pun intended.

If you go back and watch Braxton Miller's first long run, we are running a 3-3-5 defense, with Martin blitzing the A gap. They're running a zone read to the strong side and Miller keeps. Thad Randle bites hard on the running back, as does Alonzo Whaley. Randle bites so hard that he takes himself completely out of the play, while Whaley is able to recover later and be in position to make a play. There were 3 guys in position to make the play: Compton, PJ Smith and Damion Stafford. Compton gets blocked, PJ Smith gets juked, Stafford over pursues, as does Whaley after getting back in the play, allowing Miller to be sprung free past the second level. After reaching the second level, Josh Mitchell has a shot at Miller, but is absolutely destroyed by a block. So then we are left with 4 guys running Miller down in Ciante Evans, SJB, PJ Smith and Damian Stafford.

It cracks me up to see all of the armchair coaches after every loss. Some of you "think" you have the answer to everything. If the the coaches asked you what they should do before every game they would be without a job in two weeks.

These types of threads are stupid at best.

I sincerely hope you aren't referring to my analysis of Braxton Miller's 70+ yard run?

Yes, he has done just a hell of a job recruiting an impregnable offensive line. You saw what happened Saturday night. You could have timed how much time Taylor had to throw with a sun dial.
Coaches do not recruit to their particular positions. They are assigned regions throughout the country. It is quite possible actually that Barney did not recruit one single player he is coaching. Not likely, but possible.

No, your analysis is right on. Most big plays are like this. One guy misses his assignmant (randle bites on fake). Couple missed tackles (smith, Stafford) and usually a hold/clip that's not called (compton). Pretty spot on.

Yes, I agree. Beck's offense might be the best thing we have going right now. The defense is killing us and it's mainly because the front 7 is just too slow to deal with spread offenses and mobile qb's not so much about coaching IMO.
It has everything to do with coaching.....who do you think evaluated these guys and offered them scholarship to play here? If not the coaches, who is to blame for the lack of athleticism on our defense?

Remember a couple years ago our offense was anemic at best. We were all worried how this would ever be fixed with defensive minded coach. How would we ever get the talent needed for a great offense with a coach that'll only deal with defense. Well here we are, with an offense that is not only good now, but has a very VERY bright future. This is why I'm confident. Bo fixed the defense once, then fixed the offense, I'm pretty sure he can fix the defense again. It's cyclical, and every now and then you have that year where both sides are great, resulting in a championship run. Remember how bad the offense was in 99 and how great the D was. Next year? Pretty much a complete turnaround, the offense had to carry the D. In '01, both were pretty stout up until Colorado completely exposed us.

If fan opinions and fan analysis are not appropriate, perhaps you can enlighten us as to just what topics are appropriate on a college football fan forum. Thank you.

I agree with you in terms of evaluation, but Bo's defenses looked pretty damn good with BC's recruits. Obviously evaluation and recruiting is a big part of coaching at the collegiate level, but in terms of scheme I've seen that it works.
