Under Callahan you had a situation where both the head coach and the athletic director completely failed to understand the importance of the tradition of the walk-on at NU. (Along with just about every other tradition we hold dear) I can't help but wonder if the program would have flooundered as badly as it did if there was a strong AD (i.e. Osborne) over Callahan during his tenure here. And yes, there were some scholarships awarded to walk-ons during their administration, but for the most part it seemed to be a completely un-tapped resource.

Therefore "# of walk-ons is directly correlated to success."

Yes, that possibly, kind of describes a weak correlation (with terrible sample size [or some other stat terms here -- hey, its been a few decades]), but correlation does not imply causation. (See Florida State's recruiting rankings compared against their top 25 finishes this decade for more info.)

I don't know if the walk-on program caused teams to win. I do know of walk-ons who have contributed and therefore think the more the merrier, but that's just my opinion and apparently the opinion of the current coach of Nebraska whose thoughts on this actually matter.

correlation ISN'T causation.. two completely different things. But, a sample size of 30 is sufficient, which all coaches have. therefore they ARE correlated whether or not anyone wants to admit it, they ARE. But that does not mean that walk-on's are the cause of the record. But it is an item that is very debatable either way. And saying it isn't a fact that there is correlation there, is false.

There is no way Alex will not get a scholarship after this year. I know there are quite a few boosters that are unhappy that he doesn't have one already.
