Athletic director Bill Byrne got the Tunnel Walk going when he had the screens installed, and hired local sportscaster Jeff Schmahl to start HuskerVision.
Kirk Hartman has been working for HuskerVision from the start, now holding the title of Executive Director of Video Production. Hartman and 10 full-time employees, along with student workers, produce video for football games and other sporting events and shows.
No college stadiums were doing anything like Nebraska was when the Tunnel Walk started.
The first year there wasn’t a video, just a few flashes on the screens, the music and a live shot of the team walking down a hallway to the field.
“We had what I think was called a video toaster, was the apparatus we used to do a transition, and one of the guys we had up here just happened to hit some button that just kind of flashed those flashes, and that was it. Then we revealed the guys walking out,” Hartman said. “That was really it. Pretty basic.”
