Here we are again, loss # 4, and despite the general gaity and relief I sense this so-called 'admirable' defeat has placed in my fellow Huskers, I, unfortunately, as always, will be the bearer of ill tidings. Nothing about this loss has comforted me in the least. As Kirk Herbstriet continually says on NCAA 2008, "There's more to defense than emotion. You can't continually expect to play out of position..."

First off, I do not believe in moral victories, whatever the hell those are. I'd rather have a Pyhrric victory than a moral one. First of all the term usually applies to situations where a severe underdog comes within inches of victory, only to have that victory snatched from them at the last second. We have a word for that. It's called a demoralizing defeat, and if you need any further evidence, take a look at all the tears on the sideline. We achieved nothing but a blown lead and another loss, likely one that sets yet another record under the Bill Callahan Slaughter's Nebraska tour '07.

I suppose I should be grateful that the defense came out and played like Cornhuskers for three quarters. But unfortunately when I go to McDonald's I don't pay for 3/4 of a good hamburger; I don't pay for 3/4 of my fries; and I don't pay for 3/4 of soooda. I pay for it all. And I'm sorry for sounding like an a-hole, but I fear for the day when a 3/4ths played loss is something to smile about. "Well, we didn't give up 400 yards!" Oh goodie. I can't contest that our defense did come out and play stellar for 3 quarters. They flew to the ball, smacked the quarterback, broke up passes, and generally suffocated Texas. This allowed our offense to jump to a 14 point lead, one which for as far as I could tell would go unchanged if the game continued as it did.

Except it didn't.

Just like clockwork the Cosgrove Defense came trumping onto the field, and 3 touchdowns and 230-some yards later we were down by as much as we were up. Big play after big play, a running back who must have averaged 60 yards per carry in the fourth quarter. The true mark of a Callahan team: they completely choked.

My pity goes out to Sam Keller. He had a pretty good game. Even though he's never lived up to the hype, I think he's a good guy who loves football. That said, in retrospect I think I might have traded Joe Ganz's mobility for Sam's big game experience. There are just too many times where the pocket rolls around the QB, leaving several green acres of open space, that I just looked to the heavens and asked God if he would grant Keller the legs of Eric Crouch for just fifteen seconds. Alas, what usually occurs is a fumble or a sack as the DE reaches out his free arm.

If anything this game is the most negative in terms of team spirit of them all. First they expect to lose, then they come close to winning, then they blow it, then they ride home. I can't imagine the locker room after that one. The wholse season was and is shot, as not it'll take a greater miracle than before to pull out another win. I'm glad that a lot of young guys are getting on the field. Next year's coach will not only have young talent, but experienced young talent to work with. Despite a generally good gameplan on both sides of the ball, the weaknesses of these coaches were exposed with yet another simple play that baffles 30-year coaches. This is exactly what brought all this mess about. The Texas game, if anything, proves our point all over again.

Now there's nothing to do but wait.

Not happy to lose this game. For the second year in a row, this game was a win that we gave away. We allowed Charles to rush for over 200 yards in the 4th quarter. The defensive coaches did not make in-game adjustments when Texas found a way to get past all of the blitzes.

That being said, many fans complained that this team did not play with passion. A team that ws giving up on plays. Did not see any of that today and I will call that an improvement. I agree we need it for 4 quarters, not 3, but it was a better performance.

In the end, I will admit I was surprise, when I looked at the final stats, that the Defense gave up over 500 yards again. Maybe I should not have been, but I was under the impression, the team had played better.

3rd and 1 and we try a stretch play where the back gets the ball 5 yds deep in the back field :wtf

I havent been to the super bowl, I havent been a college coach BUT I know that you dont run east, west to get 1 yard! you bang castille up the gut. You have to have at least a little common sense....Right??

One mistake in your post loss #5. :hmmph

Well as usual we get the Monday Morning Quarterbacks. The truth is you didn't pay for anything. You sit on your a$$, make 400+ posts and sacrifice nothing. You weren't out there practicing in the spring or fall. You just sat back expecting someone else to carry the load and bring you the glory which you think you so richly deserve. Maybe you should try walking on next year and see what its all about.

Yet after they do their best, you whine and b!^@h they didn't measure up to your standards. Give us a break. Get a life and do something with it. The coaches didn't lose this game. The team gave this one their all. They played up to their best. Maybe it wasn't enough, but so what. They tried and that's all anyone can ask of them. They aren't out there for your enjoyment or so you can hold up a foam finger and brag to the world that you are number one. It's a game, nothing more and nothing less. When they win, they can be proud, but they should be able to know they did their best without a$$hole$ like you telling them they should have done better for you.

Your picture says it all. You are indeed a whinny sad clown and at least you recognise yourself for that.

Boy, there's an argument that has nothing to do with anything.

Since you are a veteran of the war I'll show you at least a little more respect than you've shown me. Instead bantering like a nitwit I'll try to deal with some of your nonsense in a straightforward manor.

1. I didn't pay for anything, huh? What do you suppose all the Husker gear I own is about? What do you suppose the pay-per-view packages I try to get as much as possible are about? How about the ticket prices, or the vendors I purchase from when I go to the stadium? Who do you suppose the advertisers are marketing to when they put their ads on televised games? Perhaps no one informed you, but college football is a business. Husker fans go out and cheer for winners who play their hearts out the whole game, coaches who coach a solid game and don't get once again thwarted by a basic zone read play.

Besides all that, apparently the metaphoric quality of the portion you quoted sailed right over your head. That's okay, I'll explain it to you. When I said I don't pay for 3/4 of a hamburger, what I was really saying is that, in football, you've got to play solid for four quarters. Playing well for three and then turning into a bunch of Pinkshirts in the final round is more or less a waste of my time. It is indicitive of this team and this staff, as we've seen all season, and if I were a doctor I would diagnose this disease as terminal. There need to be changes to this staff and within the lineup.

2. Apparently you were also not informed of the purpose of a message board. This site, more or less, exists to provide fans not connected directly to the football program an opportunity to discuss all the varying facets of the team, the coaching, the facilities, etc. and so forth. See, if it was a qualification that you have to currently play for the team, there'd not be many on here who could post, including yourself, most likely.

3. It's true, this is only a game. But in Nebraska it means something else. People like to get involved with it because it is an enjoyable past time. As one other poster put it, "No, it's not a game. It's NEBRASKA." While the irony of living vicareously through a football team does not escape me, it is, none the less, an enjoyable part of my life, and moreso than this I believe our program in particular represents a certain quality of individual lacking at most other institutions. Fans demand excellence from our team because our team has displayed excellence in the past. If you would like to see Memorial stadium operate like some division two squad in central Iowa where the admission is cheaper than the popcorn, you have my blessing. But the rest of us will enjoy the legacy that is Nebraska football.

4. My clown is not sad, and neither is he whiney (just as I am neither sad nor whiney[nor a clown, for that matter]). Your vision must be going.

5. As for the team and their pride, I bet they must be abudantly happy that the latest statistics have them dead last in Division 1 football in rush defense. I know I'm thrilled. I don't know how much my standards differ from theirs, but somehow I think we had other things in mind when the season began.

Have an exceedingly wonderful afternoon,

X

Hey I know what we could do. Argue and fight on the computer! It is really mature and absolutely the coolest thing to do! :sarcasm

HuskerX- can do as he pleases, he is stating his opinion. Let him.

IraqVet3- you cant tell a person what the should or shouldn't post. He is stating his opinion. It seems all you want is to seek out people an harass them. If I wanted I could tell you to get bent, but there is no point.

Maybe we should make a limit to how young we can act.

Damn, if I would have read your post five minutes ago I could have saved myself the five minutes it took to write that response....

Ugh.

OK NEW HERE...SO PLEASE BE GENTLE...lol

Personally, I thought this was one of the best games NU had this season despite the 4 quarter. I had you guys picked to win.

I'm not sure what happen in the fourth quarter beside charles 216 yards and 3 TDs, which I think was a once in life time achievement.

You guys will diffently give KU a game and I will be looking forward to watching it.

About Callahan...looking from the outside in I think he is a good coach. Though I do not know whats going on inside the locker room. I think it might be a mistake to let him go.

I think NU fans are use to seeing NU up in the top ten, believe me it will come.

About keller, he is a good quarter back and Nu offense will deffently feel the loss. I'm not sure who your back up is but he has big shoes to fill.

Though KU is 8-0 we fans are diffently not taking this year for granted. I beleive NU will be back on top its just a matter of time!!!

Good luck to you guys in game and I hope you a great time in Lawerence

Thanks, and welcome to the board! I didn't even give us a real shot at this game. I agree with you and let's have a good game in Lawrence.

Yeah, I was surprised that they put Lucky in on that play. It was very stupid on the coaches part. Put Castille in there and let him slam it up the gut.

HuskerX... I enjoyed your parenthetical and then bracketed comments more than anything on this board, I think... very nice.

And I agree with much of what you said. It was a loss... no matter how much we want to believe that it was something more. Watching a decent back look like the next NFL prodigy because of our inept defense... another Big 12 player of the week against NUs pathetic defense.

I could have sworn that Cosgrove wasn't calling the defense until the 4th quarter.... like someone else had all these great schemes, and got us a 14 point lead. Then Cosgrove said "Okay, can I coach again... please... not even I can blow 14 points in 15 minutes!"

And someone fell for that.

But I don't lay the blame on our defense. Any defense would be worn down after 5 3 and outs by our anemic offense. After marching down the field after half-time and giving us hope, they neglected to do anything productive until the very end of the game when it was pretty much out of hand. Why?

You can't expect even a decent defense to be on the field for that long without breaking down.

One field goal... that's all we had to do... stop that fricking Texas offense one more time, and we would have been in that game.

Bah.
