Honors roll in for Maher

Great game by Maher!! But it wasn't a intense pressure game either. To trully be considered great you have to perform under pressure and in big games!! I hope he does and joins the list of great Husker kickers!

Absolutely. But true...he won't be 'great' until the time comes to fill the veins with ice water and hit a crucial FG for the win. Looks like he definitely has the ability to do it.

What is it about Nebraska and kickers? Historically, we get great kickers.
Yeah, it's weird. Both punters and place-kickers, we have a long history of getting really good players.
Good kickers come here to kick, the wind of nebraska has been said by former kickers to be the best to prepare in. It is heavy air and always windy. Walk on or not come here to kick and practice for two years it is going to be hard to beat people out.

Well it's a good thing Iowa sucks and Colorado blows.

As great as Henery was, it's hard to believe that I can confidently say that I don't think we'll miss him that much. I know it's only one game, but I think Maher will fill his shoes just fine.
that might be true, but i'll wait to see how clutch he is. henery had ice through his veins and never missed when it counted most.

Now if Maher can just keep getting lucky 89.2% like Alex Henery did. Then we got something.

Maher just picked up his third Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week honor:

Co-Special Teams Player of the Week

Brett Maher, Nebraska

Jr., K, Kearney, Neb./Kearney

• Averaged 45.0 yards per punt on eight punts, placing five inside the 20-yard line

• Had two punts of 50 yards or more with a long of 61 that came in the game’s final five minutes

• Converted on a 41-yard field goal and is now 16-of-19 on field goal attempts this season

• Claims his third career weekly Big Ten honor

• Last Nebraska Special Teams Player of the Week: Brett Maher (Oct. 10, 2011)

Bruce Gaston, Purdue

So., DT, Chicago, Ill./St. Rita

• Blocked a potential game-winning extra point by Ohio State with 55 seconds remaining to force overtime

• Allowed Purdue to secure its second straight home victory over the Buckeyes

• Claims the first weekly honor of his career

• Last Purdue Special Teams Player of the Week: Kawann Short (Oct. 11, 2010)

Congrats to Brett Maher and our staff and program.

If anything, this bodes well for our recruiting of skill/special team positions in the future. While it's not in your face like a receiver or running back are, kickers are an integral part of a successful team. A school that understands that and has fans that cheer that will endear itself to the best kickers/punters in the land, and it can only make us better in the future. :)
