How do you miss a runway Southwest?

According to news the pilots of the plane had 12 years of experience with the airline. Right now they are on paid leave pending a investigation.

They didnt miss the runway, they just landed at the wrong airport. Lol. Drunks.

 
I don't think it's really that hard of a thing to do. Think about how similar everything looks from up there. Now think about it being night time and having no visual references other than lights and your instruments. If they were unfamiliar with the airport then it wouldn't be a very difficult thing to do at all, especially since they were within 7 miles or so of the intended airport. They see runway lights a little sooner than expected and assume they are on course and the instruments are off. I'm not real familiar with flying, but if both airports had ILS (Instrument landing system) I could see that easily getting screwed up as well since it's basically radio frequencies that help guide the plane in. Branson airport was fairly new, 2009 opening, privately owned and middle of nowhere, no buildings and houses around. Plus no taxiways (unusual) thus relies on "backtaxi" procedure..... dangerous. Also, Branson is not equipped with radar. The only positive thing, long runway (7140').

Definition: Backtaxi (also known as backtrack) is an airport ground procedure which involves the use of any portion of a runway as a taxiway for an aircraft to taxi in the opposite direction from which it will take off or has landed. The procedure is commonly used at smaller airports and private strips which may not have separate paved taxiways parallel to the runway. See Tenerife airport disaster, where two 747's at Tenerife airport were required to backtaxi in order to position themselves for take-off.

I'm sure everyone of us has had a total brain fart while at work. This one obviously was their version.

It is right to suspend them and evaluate their ability to do their job.

 
Southwest's quality of service has went completely downhill over the years...but hasn't stopped the 'budget' airline who offers next-to-nothing on their flights to raise their prices about 7,000%. The only thing going for them anymore is their baggage allowance.
