Aww cmon Willie! Are trying to tell me that kids outside of Nebraska are superhuman mutants or something? 95%?? Must be something in the water suppressing our athletic ability here is that it? Dude! You've gotta be kidding me!

The only reason we don't have more top prospects is because we have a smaller population. Bigger states obviously spend more money on their HS programs, but that doesn't mean we're 95% devoid of competitve talent. In a state of 1.7 million people I can't believe you can't find 185 good football players to make one roster if you looked deep enough and spent enough time and effort to develop it.

So Barney has to be fired for wishing for more local kids on the roster?? I'd like to see it that way too.. I think it would be nice. Doesn't mean it's ever going to happen, but it would be nice if it did ....at least once in a while....

jeez, it wasn't that long ago everybody was belly aching about all the out of state prima donnas that came here just to get to the NFL and weren't playing for the sake of being at te school.. now it's 'Oh no, our kids can't compete...get those out-of-staters in here!'...

I wouldn't go that far but he has been rumored to be pretty crappy recuirter, plus they assigned him Omaha where most years, is where the most of the talent of NE comes out of. (Don't get angry, I said most not all I love out west NE but I am looking at the facts

1999 102 NE kids 79 other states Team went 12-1 won the Big 12 and finished 3rd and second in the polls

While some of the kids did not play a integral part of the games they did helped out in other ways.

Compared to the 48 players from Nebraska on the 2007 team and 70 out of state players

I see no reason why some people are against bringing in walkons that can help with their attitude. Like someone stated already he said roster not Scholarships. If Nebraska ends up screwed like this class you can call me a happy camper.

That attitude got us real far the last 4 years, yes I agree we should just go after stars no matter where they are from.---NOT!!!

For one a comment like that makes the assumption that you think there is not enough talent around here to field a high quality team, that is a falicy, as the list of 102 players on the 99 team proves.

Part of what makes this place special is the attitude that the more local kids have, the work ethic etc. The work ethic of Texas kids is also what makes them good recruits. You listen to some of the things that Will Compton has said recently and he is a local kid that "gets it", yes he is from Missouri but he's close enough to know what Nebraska is all about. Mo Purify while he was a good player to this day does not "get" Nebraska football, there was an article a month or two ago from his local paper that clear as day read that he had no clue what it meant to be a Husker. I'm not saying to go out and fill your whole team with kids from a 500 mile radius from Lincoln, you have to go out and build relationships with certain areas and recruit them.

If we can do well recruiting, Nebraska, Missouri, Colorado, Kansas, Texas, New Jersey we will be just fine. If you pick up a few out of Cali or Flordia or anywhere else that is great too. I do think that we will see a trend of getting some high quality defensive players out of SEC country, due to the reputation Bo built at LSU. Those kids in LA, MS, AL, FL, GA saw Bo's Defenses and they also saw the relationship he had with his players.

I wouldn't get too worked up about it. It's not like they're going to let every swinging jock strap who wants to play "walk on". The people who walk on will have talent, you can take that to the bank.

i said no such thing. i want kids that can play. if they come from NE great. if they don't, that should be great too. ND doesn't make it a point to win with Indiana kids, Michigan doesn't require their roster to be from MI. USC doesn't require their starting QBs to come from CA. i don't see why we should limit ourselves when the top programs don't.

I agree with that, but to not focus on regions is something that simply can't be done. You have to pick your regions. You have to build relationships with the hs coaches in those regions. If you recruit 100 players a year and you walk into 100 high schools where you've never been before you are going to have a very very low success rate. How ever, if you recruit in an area where you have connections your success rate should be much higher.

The staff isn't letting just anyone walk on. Jamrog said they initially started with a list of over 100 players and approached the 30-35 they felt could contribute about walking on.

I don't think ND is a good example, but I think Barney Cotton was rfefering to total number of players on the roster. I am not sure there is a magical number or percentage. I just think we need to bring in as much of the Nebraska talent as we can, whether it be walk on or full ride.

 
Uno, I agree with you, I don't think there should be a specific 2/3 of the roster. It depends on the talent level of the state each year, that is one of the things that I didn't like about the quote
