Husker-themed chopper on display at Saturday’s game

Choppers are light motorcycles that have unnecessary parts “chopped” off and are later customized for their riders.
However, David Prochello, owner of Pooch’s Custom & Theme Cycles of Dakota City, Nebraska, is attempting to add as much about the university’s storied football tradition as possible to a new type of chopper.
Commemorating Cornhusker football is nothing new to the state of Nebraska. What Prochello and his staff have created, though, is one-of-a-kind.
Husker aficionados will now have the chance to ride a cultural symbol of rebellion.
After visiting the university nine months ago to pitch their idea, Porchello’s company is now putting the finishing touches on a Husker Chopper.
Pooch’s Custom & Theme Cycles completed the necessary stages for the Collegiate Licensing Company and are the first to do this type of work for any university, Prochello said.
His wife, Julie, who is in charge of contracting for the company, is proud of the final product. “It’s the classiest chopper I’ve ever seen,” she said.
Their goal was to pay tribute to Husker football and the five national championship teams of 1970, 1971, 1994, 1995 and 1997. The proceeds will benefit the universities Athletic Department.
“It’s not your standard chopper,” Porchello said.
The motorcycle will have five spokes, each representing a year the Huskers took the national crown.
“The spokes will kind of be like mini trophies,” he said. “And they’ll each have gold.”
Gold leaf – a thin sheet of gold used in motorcycle design –decorates the tank of the bike. All the fabrication, including both filters and the oil bag, were done in lead.
Wilson Sporting Goods donated official pigskin to the project, which was used for the seats, grips and the footpads.
“With cash and labor, we’ve spent over $125,000 on the bike,” Porchello said.
The chopper will be brought to Lincoln on Friday night. It will be ready for display Saturday – as the Huskers open the year against Maine – at Husker Nation Pavilion, located northeast of Memorial Stadium.
Bids can now be placed on the company’s Web site at http://www.huskerchopper.com. Currently, the asking price is $175,000.
