Husker News
Coach Callahan held a pre-spring ball press conference on Wednesday to
give a briefing on progress during winter conditioning and plans for
spring practice.
Spring drills begin March 24th, the spring game is April 17th at 12:30
pm. You can call to get tickets for the spring game: 1-800-8-BIGRED
Notable among Coach Callahan's announcements and other points of
interest:
· The media will be allowed to watch spring practice sessions for the
first time in several years.
· NU only has 78 players on scholarship (85 scholarships are allowed).
· Former blue chip recruit Ryan Schuller was not given clearance to
practice because of blood clot problems and has left the program.
· Injury plagued Lannie Hopkins has left the program.
· Frequently injured defensive starter Phillip Bland has decided to
quit playing football.
· Due to O Line depth problems, Richie Incognito is moving to center.
· Speedster and former top cornerback, Willie Amos, is moving to wide
reciever.
· David Horn is not listed on the I Back depth chart.
· T Green and C Ross are listed as the top two I Backs.
· J Dailey is listed as the #1 QB. Joe Dailey said that the current
coaches "relate to us a little better."
· QB's will wear the "hands off" green jersey's during spring practice.
· Pro scouts were on campus this week.
· Spring practice will be run like an NFL camp.
· New D Coordinator Kevin Cossgrove said the blackshirts will strive to
have great fundamentals, to be physical, to run to the football, and to
play with great passion.
· Winter conditioning was rigorous. Players got up as early as 4:30 am
to make it to the 6:00 am running sessions that were attended by the
assistant coaches.
· The team celebrated the end of winter conditioning Thursday night by
having a team bowling night (hopefully they will be bowling January
2005!).
· Former D line and D ends coach, Jeff Jamrog, has been hired as the
defensive coordinator at Western Illinois.
· Former receivers coach, Ron Brown, is leaving football and has
accepted the Nebraska State Director's job for the Fellowship of
Christian Athletes. When asked if he would miss coaching, he responded
saying that his greatest thrill while coaching was having the platform
that allowed him to lead people to Christ. He continued saying that his
main concern was that he would be able to work at a job that allowed
him to do what God wanted him to do and as long as he could still lead
people to Christ, he wouldn't miss coaching too much.
