Husker Satellite Camps

Really thought we'd be hearing more about this by now. Would be nice to have the word out as I'm sure a lot of guys are already lining up their schedules for the summer.

“If we’re going to compete for the championship and everybody is going to play in the playoff system and everybody is going to compete for that, we need to get our rules in alignment so we’re all on a level playing field, whether they’re transfer rules, whether they’re satellite camp rules,” Alabama coach Nick Saban told reporters this week in Florida. “It’s a disadvantage not to be able to do something in one league and be able to do it in another.”


As Baumgardner points out, we didn’t recall the outcry down south a year ago when the SEC gave the Big Ten, the Big 12 and the Pac-12 the middle finger by explaining how they’re keeping eight-game league schedules—allow other leagues move to a nine-game conference menus. By staying at eight, the SEC can schedule another cupcake in the non-conference.

NU's satellite camp schedule finailzed

Nebraska's football staff will take part in five satellite camps in June, coach Mike Riley said in a conversation with The World-Herald on Friday afternoon.

NU will travel to Atlanta (June 15), Miami (June 16), Houston (June 17), Dallas (June 18) and Santa Monica, California (June 19). While at Oregon State, Riley had previously held camps in Dallas, Houston and Los Angeles; Atlanta and Miami are new spots.

Riley said he'd prefer as many prospects as possible attend Nebraska's camps that start next week, but, for those who can't pay to travel to those camps, the satellite camps help "Nebraska come to them." Riley will work the camps along with NU assistants.

A few members of NU's staff, Riley said, may also work Michigan's "Exposure U" camp in mid-June. Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh — who played under Riley with the San Diego Chargers — has invited all coaches from all levels of football to participate in the camp.

"That would be Jim — it's awesome!" Riley said, chuckling at Harbaugh's worldwide invite. Jim's son, Jay Harbaugh, worked for Riley at Oregon State as an undergraduate. "We've got great feelings about the Harbaughs, especially Jay. We have a pretty good relationship with them. Won't change anything on the field. We've coached against each other numerous times now. But I still really appreciate him."

I am surprised Harbaugh hasn't said anything about Saban and the SEC crying over the camps. He doesn't shy away from words.

Nebraska director of player personnel Ryan Gunderson has been a part of many camps, previously serving as Oregon State’s assistant director of personnel and following Mike Riley to Nebraska. The Huskers have five camps scheduled this month in Atlanta, Miami, Houston, Dallas and Santa Monica. When the Beavers started doing them, it was a huge advantage.


“The first one we did (at Oregon State), we went and worked a camp down in Los Angeles three years ago,” Gunderson told The Bottom Line radio show in Lincoln. “I think from that camp, of the kids who were there, come Signing Day, we signed six of those kids. So for one camp, that’s pretty powerful.

“Beyond that, the next year, we expanded and worked a camp in L.A. and worked a camp in the Bay Area. Last year, we ended up in the Bay Area, L.A., Dallas and Houston. So we got around and did a lot. We go to some other camps, too.”

Both Urban Meyer and Hugh Freeze have noted you have to weigh the cost of taking part in a camp against the chances you can pull recruits from them. When the Beavers started, it was a big deal. Now? They’re valuable, but they’re not what they used to be, because many more programs are doing them. Meyer said he doesn't want to do them simply because other teams are.

“They’re good,” Gunderson said. “But three years ago, when we did it for the first time, there weren’t a lot of people doing it. So it was even more powerful. Now, everybody does it. So maybe it’s not as much of an advantage, but it’s still pretty powerful, especially for getting your image out there and people kind of know who you are in that area.”
