I didn’t say anything about the SEC, my comments are about the Big Ten and how most teams in the Big Ten play.  It’s size and physicality first, and speed second.  Riley tried to get by with smaller players and that failed miserably. Frost inherited many of those guys continued to struggle.  He identified the biggest issue is the lack of size and not competing physically.
 

Watch the NFL.  Yes, those guys are big and fast, but it’s still mainly basketball on grass/turf now. Most teams don’t even bother to try and establish the run.  The rules favor a passing game and most teams are going that route.  That’s why defenders like David, White, and Matthieu are so valuable. They can cover the pass very well, and do just good enough against the run to be on the field for most plays. Barrett is a pass rushing specialist, who is very good at that role.  The small guys you mention on offense are also extremely fast and/or quick, so they make up for their lack of size. 

Yes, it’s easy to say “just give me great football players” but those aren’t always easy to identify.  Even a guy like Luke Reimer who looks to be “just a good football player” may have an issue playing a lot of snaps in the Big Ten because he is relatively undersized, may struggle against the bigger teams, and even he has struggled staying healthy.

Shaq barrett 6'2

David 6'1

Honey badger 5'7

Devin white 6'0

Antonio brown 5'10

Scotty miller 5'9

Both tb safties under 5'10

Im stopping here just not list them all,  but it seems a large chunk of rosters for the super bowl dont fit the prototypical height/weight. I know this is kindof cherry picking but those are a lot of the best players starting tomorrow.

All those dudes under 6’4 are probably the 4.4s that you look for. 
 

white and David are athletic freaks

barrett has a great get off but he isn’t a JPP who fits the Bill of what every coach in America is looking for.

Teams still establish they run, they just do it a bit different these days, but the basic principle is still there, slow the rushers, the lbs, and try and force more defenders towards the line of scrimmage.

I don’t even know what the discussion is about anymore. Either way, recruiting is hard enough and you want “just find football players” regardless of size. I know that size and speed isn’t the end all-be all, however the measurables (size, speed, quickness, etc.) are what every coach across multiple sports and multiple levels look at when analyzing talent. Is that analysis perfect? Far from it. Are there outliers? Yes there are. However, if you are trying to build a team on outliers and abnormalities, you probably won’t be very successful.

Sidenote: I totally get where you are coming from. My son is a good high school baseball player who has never had the “measurables”, but he is still a darn good ball player. I don’t like hearing “it’s all about the measurables” but unfortunately it’s very hard to measure intangibles (by definition). So, he just continues to play ball and prove himself to his coaches. Really, that’s all that David and the other guys you mentioned have done during their career.

Hell, the guy that won the heisman probaly will only 5'11 at the combine. He looks small.

I think we are more alike in our thoughts than you would initially think. However, Frost has seen the team being overmatched physically for the first 3 years and is trying to compensate.  While I like speed and quickness, to compete in the Big Ten (the first step in the process) it takes size. I like where the roster is headed in terms of size. That’s the first step in the roster overhaul. If Frost is able to add special speed and quickness (regardless of size) to the size that’s what could make the team special.

Size matters a lot in football. 

Longer wingspans for the Dl allows  them to easier occupy more space. 

Size on the OL makes it harder for pass rush to get through and around. 

Larger WR's who are athletic have a bigger catch radius and a bigger blocking radius, making it harder for a defender to break a block. 

Size matters for linebackers in the Big Ten since this is a LOS league and you have to be able to take on blocks from big lineman. 

Go and look at the rosters of the teams who win the Big Ten over the last 15 years and you will never find any of those teams with smaller players starting - always a lot of size and bulk.

The difference between Garrett Nelson being a decent  player for us and Grant Wistrom’s plaque on the a wall is speed.
