Huskers Add Former Miami Long Snapper

As critical as I have been of this staff, I gotta admit that is a great "get". Filling an immediate need with a qualified guy from a major conference shows Bo and Co are really working the angles this year. I like it.

Guess the biggest question is how did he do last year? are we upgrading over what we had last week? Yes he has more experience than the guys we used Saturday, but I did not see any bad snaps either.

I'm assuming he's a walk-on so there's really no down side. If he's the best guy, he'll get the job. If Faulkenberry is better, we get a little insurance.

We punted...once? I don't remember what our field goal snaps looked like. I was too worried about the kickers.

Punted twice, kicked two field goals and seven extra points. Not sure if they were all perfect but definitely good enough. Just one game though.

See a need, fill a need. Bo has developed as a personnel manager. Look at some of the moves he made in the offseason and camp, Kieron Williams to replace Drake Martinez, Alex Lewis for immediate experience and depth, Stringfellow (well...that was a bust) for QE, Stoltenburg from OL and Newel from DT to DE during camp to push our 1 and 2 guys (both ended up red-shirting but still a good move to test out options for depth), flipping DJ Foster from OG to DT as soon as Curry was gone and Kevin Williams got injuried to make sure we are 4-5 deep at DT instead of getting another Cam Meredith situation.

Keep in mind he's a grad student, so the academics are different than undergrad (e.g.not likely to be tutors).

Excuse me for saying this.......but what happened to Drake?

Good point.

He was sick/injured over the spring and then decided to leave to be closer to home. At least that's what I'm guessing. It probably didn't help our chances of keeping him once he became the only Martinez here.

Thanks. I hadn't been aware. Wish him well like I'm sure all do.

Ya, something tells me if he is smart enough to be a grad student he can handle the classroom work. Also grad students arevin tailored classes in which they are interested in and usually excel in.

I don't think he's a walk-on. He's not from around here, has no ties to the program, don't see why he'd come here to pay his own way. As far as him being the best guy goes I'd be shocked if he isn't starting soon, we beat the bushes for another longsnapper and brought this guy in for a reason. Gerry was our starting punt-snapper and he's now done practicing snapping. That leaves snapping for kicks as a competition, maybe due to his experience with our holder/kicker Faulkenberry can hold-off the new guy for that job.

It's also a possibility (though less likely) that he was actually here already and had funding. It says he was a walk-on at Miami and played for an injured guy last year. If that player came back and Kelly already had his degree he probaby figured he should move on with his life outside of fb and maybe in the degree he wants we have a better program. Or maybe we just happen to be the school that offered an assistantship. And maybe since it's Nebraska he assumed no chance at playing before now because he wasn't even the starter at Miami and then he was like "holy crap they need a longsnapper!"
