Huskers add walk-on kicker from Chadron State

Former Chardon State kicker Michael Ziola plans to be part of the 2011 Husker walk-on class, according to Scout.
The Columbus High graduate is hopeful to be part of the program by the summer, though he would have to sit out this fall after transferring.

Brett Maher and incoming freshman Mauro Bondi will compete for the kicking job this year.

As a redshirt freshman at Chadron State, Ziola was 18-of-22 in field goals and made all his extra-point attempts. He was 5-of-8 from beyond 40 yards with a long of 46.

Why would he have to sit out? Chadron St. isn't D-1. I thought players could transfer between divisions and play right away.

I don't like it... The last thing this team needs is a transfer kid coming in and preventing the potential Heisman candidates we already have from developing!!!!!!

they can transfer down in division without sitting out but they cannot transfer to a higher division without sitting out. if they could then the lower division schools would essentially become farm programs for higher division schools. obviously that cant work, however it would be nice if it could!!! then we could have had woodhead after he had already established himself!!!

Thanks. I didn't realize the transfer rules depended on whether the player was transferring up or down divisions. Your farm team explanation makes sense.
