There have been many times in the last decade I have not had positive things to say about the direction the program is going. I just don't see that at all right now.
I think there is a case to be made that Nebraska could very well be teeing up for the worst year under Coach Ruhle.
We have new coordinators for all three phases. Special Teams and Offensive coordinators are objectively much better
We have to replace a lot of our players due to transfers The majority of our transfer players were not impact players. We are bringing in more impact transfer players than we lost.
We are not going to have super seniors on the defense and that was key last year. This is fair. Our defense will probably be slightly worse.
We haven't been good at the logistics of the game (timeout, third and fourth down decision making, poor ball security, etc) Turnovers 2023 2.6 per game and 2024 1.5 per game. Massively better. As far as play calling, our 3rd down play calling was bad and now we have a new coordinator. This is a reason for optimism.
And, despite hiring a new special teams guy, it seems that Coach Ruhle doesn't plan to put a larger practice emphasis on Special Teams. Rhule blew up the special teams room the same way he blew up the QB room at the end of last year. New coach and new players. I expect special teams to improve just as QB play did last year
It is year three, and that's when Rhule's teams make progress. But he isn't following the model he did at Temple and Baylor. It hasn't been a carbon copy of those results, but he has shown improvement in both position groups and overall record just as he did at those stops. Seems like he's on track for improvement again in 2025.
