Huskers Look for Expanded Use of Helmet Radios

Throughout Nebraska spring football and then the Red-White scrimmage, offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf utilized a wireless system that allowed him to communicate with his quarterbacks through a transmitting device to helmet speakers.


Langsdorf first got accustomed to using it last season in the NFL and believes it has a future in the college game.

“I think it’s coming,” he said. “I don’t know when that’ll happen in college football, but I don’t think it’s far away.”

And, if so, that would be welcomed by GSC, the Lincoln-based company that provided the digital network for the Huskers — and already does the same for all 32 NFL teams.

“We’ve had a number of inquiries lately,” said Alex Shada, director of operations for GSC. “It’s hard to say if it’s maybe 2016 or ’17 or whenever, (but) it’s a matter of time. We would love it, obviously, if the NCAA says, ‘Yeah, let’s do it.’ ”

I think it would be great, then you can have the OC in the QBs ear, making sure he stays calm, confident and knows where his reads are

I would think the communication would get cut off a set amount of time before the play clock runs out - 15 seconds in the NFL.
