Pelini: Former Husker Colman could rejoin program

Nebraska football coach Bo Pelini said Thursday he's considering hiring ex-Husker linebacker Doug Colman for an unspecified position.

Pelini said nothing's finalized and that if Colman were hired, it wouldn't be as a graduate assistant coach.

Colman lettered at NU from 1991-95 and has been the head coach at Absegami High School in Galloway, N.J., for the past five years, sporting a 40-15 record.

In his first season, Colman's team won seven games, tying a school record. By his fourth year, Absegami had an 11-1 record, winning its only South Jersey title in school history.

Colman came to Nebraska by way of New Jersey, a standout player at Ocean City High School.

After college, Colman was drafted in the sixth round by the New York Giants. He was a linebacker/special teams regular in the NFL for five seasons, playing for the Giants, Tennessee Titans and Cleveland Browns.

In other Husker news, defensive coordinator Carl Pelini will be inducted into the Cardinal Mooney High School hall of fame this weekend.

maybe i am missing something (probably) but didnt we already fill the allowed amount of coaches? do you think he might be coming on as something else if he does indeed get hired?

 
I don't think he'll be a GA because of what Pelini said in the LJS article.

He may get an administrative role in the football department, but the only position open coaching wise is GA.

 
With the recent announcement of Doak's hire...I was wondering if Colman was still going to be hired. So, I did a little searching, and it seems Colman is in the process of being hired if not already hired.

Doug Colman, who coached the Absegami football team to its only South Jersey championship and the two highest win totals in its history, resigned yesterday as the school's head coach. Colman will complete the school year and then accept an undisclosed position at the University of Nebraska, his alma mater.

The loss of Colman marks the second successful head coach to announce his departure from Absegami within a month. Girls basketball coach Greg Goodwin will step down at the end of this season.

Colman took over at Absegami in 2003 after a couple of years as assistant coach at Ocean City and Oakcrest. His first team was 7-4, tying a school record for wins in a season, and notched the first NJSIAA playoff win in school history. His 2004 team tied the record again with a 7-3 mark, won the Cape-Atlantic League's American Conference championship but lost its playoff opener.

In 2005, Colman guided Absegami to a 10-2 record, another conference title and a spot in the South Jersey Group 4 final, losing a heartbreaker to Cherokee. The next year the Braves finished 11-1, shared the conference championship and won a thriller over Cherokee in the Group 4 final to bring the school its first South Jersey championship. Absegami was 5-5 last year, giving Colman a 40-15 record, the second most wins in school history.

As a player at Ocean City High School, Colman gained 1,272 rushing yards, the 20th highest total in school history, and was named South Jersey Defensive Player of the Year his senior year. He was coached by his father, Wayne, at OCHS. Both had careers in the NFL, the only father-son team in South Jersey to make that claim.

Colman, 34, played on National Championship teams at Nebraska in 1994 and 1995. He was a sixth round draft pick of the New York Giants, where he excelled on special teams. He also played for the Tennessee Titans (including Super Bowl XXXIV) and the Cleveland Browns.

Ostergard essentially had a position made up for him. So I don't see how that would affect anything. Although I kinda doubt he does come back anyways.

 
I know it said he wasn't going to be a GA but with the new opening has that changed?

My guess is he'll get some kind of position like Ekeler had down in LSU where technically he was a strength coach but he worked with Bo.

 
I don't care if he gets paid to just shakes hands on Saturdays at the stadium, getting some inroads in the Jersey area is needed. :lol:
